Veterans Day / Memorial Day Poem #38

A Folded Flag...

A folded flag reminds me of Dad
a nation's way of paying respect
to families who grieve with honor

A loved one's life, that is no more

For children like me, who never met Dad,
It's a legacy to follow; an inheritance of pride
Thirty years I waited for it to be mine

My hands were shaking as I opened that box
Our history, our future, all became mine

There came an obligation

There's power and strength in a
Fold Flag that was once a casket's shroud
Dignity and honor in this Nation's past

The men and the women who served for us
whether they lived or they died
They gave America their lives

And they must not be forgotten

They did their duty,
they played their part
And now the duty is ours

We must preserve their memories,
respect their service,
honor their lives

Whether or not we agree

Men and women, sons and daughters
brothers and sisters, fathers and
mothers is who they were

Just like us today

Many a child there is like me, who
has no memories of a parent's arms

Only some stories and photos
and a child's wishful thinking

Our great solace is this mighty day

When we stand proud
and our teardrops fall

as America says thank you
for the service our veterans gave

We feel the price that we too paid

A Folded Flag reminds me of Dad
A Nation's way of paying respect
for families who grieve with honor

Written from the heart by Geneva Brett
Veterans Day 1996

My Father died in the Korean "Conflict" a week before my birth... I didn't
get
his folded flag, which was once his casket's shroud, until I was 42 years
old...having waited until my father's father passed, and passed on Dad's
folded
flag to me.
