Let's get something straight from the outset: The intent of the
Second Amendment is not to allow hunters to indulge in their favorite
s****t.
It is not about target shooting, or even about protecting your life and
property from muggers and other Ne'er-do-wells. The second amendment is
about protecting our freedom from an overbearing government when it gets
too
big for its britches.
Lest we forget, the founding fathers, as they set about framing the
constitution that would create a new country, had just finished wresting
that freedom from a totalitarian government, by force of arms. These were
wise men, who foresaw that governments that cannot be opposed will
inevitably abrogate the rights of citizens in favor of the interests of
the
rulers. There is only one thing that prevents a government from trampling
on
the rights of its citizens, that is the fear that, pushed too far, they
will
fight back.
Kent State, Ruby Ridge, Waco, MOVE . . . we do not have to look far to see
evidence that, unchecked, our government will perpetrate the same abuses
against its people as many other governments have in the past. Moreover,
we
also see that our men in uniform--soldiers, National Guard, FBI,
police--will just as happily follow orders to shoot innocent citizens of
their own country as any invading force. the only thing that will give
them
pause is the knowledge that some may shoot back.
I consider myself a man of peace. I believe in non-violent solutions when
such are available. However, I am also a realist, and my experience with
those in positions of power provides no basis for believing that those who
lust for power will ever restrain themselves from abusing it. Sadly, my
experience with those who "only follow orders" has, similarly, shown me
that
a Nazi is a Nazi, regardless of their uniform, or the particular words
with
which they "Seig Hiel!"
As the father of two children, I would very much like them to grow up in a
safe, sane society. I worry about the armed thugs in our inner-city slums;
about rampaging students in our schools; and about the proliferation of
violence in our culture. Unfortunately, disarming the citizens, and
granting
irresistible power to the government will not lead to the free country in
which I would like my children to grow up.
Hence, in my opinion, citizens should not only be allowed to arm
themselves,
they should be able to achieve parity in armament with those in
government,
since they are the ones against whom our freedom must ultimately be
protected.
