NOW POLES WON=92T SIGN DOOMED EU TREATY
PRESSURE: Gordon Brown
Wednesday July 2,2008

THE hated European Treaty suffered a fresh blow yesterday when
Poland=92s president said he would not sign it.
Lech Kaczynski said the Irish =93no=94 vote had sunk plans for Brussels to
have even more power over foreign policy, social affairs and border
controls in the 27 EU countries.
He added: =93For the time being the question of the Treaty is
pointless.=94
His comments are a blow to French president Nicolas Sarkozy, coming
just hours after he started his six-month term chairing the EU.
But his words were warmly greeted by the Tories.
Shadow Foreign Minister Mark Francois said: =93President Kaczynski=92s
courage and leader****p in speaking out are a stark contrast to Gordon
Brown=92s complete lack of either.
=93Mr Brown has rammed this Treaty through to put pressure on the Irish
without any democratic mandate from the British people.
=93It would be totally undemocratic if the Irish were made to vote twice
before the British got to vote once.=94

Mr Kaczynski has been a long-time critic of the Treaty, playing on
fears that it would force Roman Catholic Poland to accept homo***ual
marriages and more liberal laws on abortion.
He said he was happy to see the EU carry on as it was rather than
agree to a new rulebook.
Mr Kaczynski added: =93It=92s not right to say, =91If there is no Treaty,
there is no EU=92.
=93The EU worked, is working and will work. It isn=92t ideal, but a
structure this complicated couldn=92t be.=94
It emerged yesterday that he could be forced to sign anyway after
Poland=92s prime minister, Donald Tusk, backed the Treaty.
But Mr Kaczynski=92s comments have added to the growing rebellion after
Czech president Vaclav Klaus vowed not to sign.
Sweden=92s parliament may also reject the Treaty.
France is threatening to retaliate by blocking Croatia=92s entry to the
EU.
And Mr Sarkozy is backing efforts to force the Irish to hold a second
referendum.
Asked this week if Ireland should vote again, he said tellingly: =93I
don=92t want to say it like that because it would give the impression of
forcing their hand.=94
If the Irish refuse or vote no again, they could be told to quit the
EU. Nineteen countries, including Britain, have approved the Treaty.
Labour reneged on a manifesto pledge to hold a referendum on the new
European Constitution when it was replaced by the virtually identical
Lisbon Treaty.

WHY ?
02.07.08, 3:51pm
Why won't our unelected Prime Minister realise that the treaty is
doomed.
He treats the British voters like idiots.
There is nothing in it for us except more disasters.
There may be something in it for HIM though.
