Most people in the USA are confused in thinking that we have a democratic
form of government. The truth is that we really have a plutocratic form of
government with most if not all of the decisions made by and for the rich.
There are many books that explain this. The one I just finished is:
"When Cor****ations Rule the World" by David Korten (and I'm not a relative
or have any relation****p with the guy to promote his book).
There are many other good books out there.
The "poor" in the USA (probably the rest of the world, too) are,
basically, screwed from the get-go.
