To answer the question: Marxists call themselves communists, in the
early days before world war 1 the communists & social-democrats were
all one group. Communists split out because they opposed the first
world war, social-democrats betrayed their earlier promises and went
on to serve in the war cabinets overseeing the mutual slaughter
of the working class. At least so I'm told, no reason to doubt
it, sounds like your average social-democrat leaders at work IMHO.
Social-economic justice was the obviously pressing goal, being worked
to death in factories, children included. The means by which they
wanted to achieve this is with democratization and social equality
(like equal crime, equal justice). The Marxists wanted to take out the
free market and substituting a plan-economy, their big mistake. Their
goals were probably good, certainly at the lowest levels because
they were suffering.
