What they're always whining about: having to acknowledge the 
reality and significance of other people.  The conservative viewpoint
is the child's viewpoint: I'm the center of the world and nothing 
more complicated than me is real; no pain has reality but my pain, 
no one has any right to tell me what to do, and my stuff is mine and 
yours is too if I am big enough to take it away from you.

That's how it's been sounding to me lately in the US.
