Well, you don't need marriage for most of those things. For instance,
you can will your belongings to anybody you wish including your dog.
There is no real advantage to filing joint in taxes. In fact, in some
cases, it's worse. I don't even know what in hell loss of consortium
is. And you can have anybody in the world notified upon death. There
is no advantage in marriage in wrongful death; that is up to an
insurance company, and again, you can make that policy to who ever you
wish. Hospital visitation rights is policy of the hospital--not the
government.
Social Security survival benefits has to do with a "stay at home" mom
who never worked to have benefits of her own. Gay couples don't need
this benefit; they both can work. Same goes with pensions which very
few people have today. That too is a thing of the past.
