McDonalds' signed a seven-year outsourcing deal, reportedly worth $219
million dollars, to allow up to half of drive-thru customers to order food
from workers not actually on the premises. It's not clear whether all of
these workers would be overseas, or simply in another state with a lower
minimum wage.

The company plans to install a high speed voice over IP system to connect
all restaurants to the central call center outside Manila. At the call
center all voice orders will be taken and the data sent back to each
restaurants kitchen. "By collecting all the order taking to a single call
center one order taker can actually service up to five restaurants at a
time. No more standing around between orders, no more idle employees on
the
clock." Bragged a member of the development team.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The world's largest fast-food chain said on
Thursday
it is looking into using remote call centers to take customer orders in an
effort to improve service at its drive-thrus. "If you're in L.A.... and
you
hear a person with a North Dakota accent taking your order, you'll know
what
we're up to," McDonald's Chief Executive Jim Skinner told investors.

Would You Like Fries With That? Fourteen McDonalds in Oregon and
southeastern Washington have been linked to the call center operated by
SEI-CCS Inc., a Fargo, N.D.-based company that works closely with
McDonald's. The call taker in Grand Forks enters your order into a
computer
and relays it back to the home restaurant, where it pops up on a screen in
the kitchen.
