Drivers get paid by the mile, not by the hour. If they drive at 55
instead of 65 they take a 15% pay cut. How would you like a 15% pay cut?
What might make sense is for the trucking companies to give the drivers a
15% pay hike and reduce the trucks to 55. At 5.5 MPG and diesel at $4.25
the price per mile (ppm) for fuel is 77 cents. Average drive pay
including benefits is probably about 45 cents (actual pay is 38 cents).
If 55 mph improves fuel efficiency by 15% then the companies and the
drivers break even. It probably doesn't. There is a big hit between 65
and 75 but not between 55 and 65. My own experience has been that 55 mph
in Ca. And Or. does not save much fuel at all.

If you stop an 18 wheeler on the Highway the driver will be pissed :)
