The kind of attitude that you express here is what makes many of us remain
strong allies of the American even when they pass through one of these
"crazy" periods. We know that at the core of the American mentality there
is a determination to defend freedom and democracy that cannot be
permanently extinguished even by the tyranny of the ultra conservative
religious

In the perception of outsiders and allies, America's brush with insanity
has been taking place since the Kennedy assassination.

The USA has created an impossible situation with its ill thought out war
on drugs in which police agencies are thrown against criminal actions,
that American organised crime - often combined with American intelligence
services - have been involved in. Your entire intelligence, military and
legislative system is in such disarray that law enforcement and the
administration are dysfunctional. This disarray underlies the disaster in
the Middle East

Adding to this mess, the collapse of mainstream Christianity, brought
about by its failure to accept radical theological reform, has led to the
creation of a fundamentalist religion that is barely recognisable as
"christianity" - the theological and moral core of American society has
imploded

This mess cannot be put right by simply tinkering with the machine.
America is faced with the reality that it needs cultural, educational, and
political, and constitutional reform on a peaceful revolutionary scale

Never since the War of Independence has America so much needed the calling
of a constituent assembly - but this must be called by the people
themselves. Your two party system is nothing but a pair of masks for the
same Junta - and this Junta is malignant to even America's alliances - let
alone to the American people

What Christians CAN do - are obliged to do- is to reform their own
religion, in order that America may have a rational moral base to social
and political and economic reform. To fail to do so will be not just to
give in to the present Junta, but to encourage the spread within America
of a new fascism the era of "the boot stamping in the human face forever"
as Orwell put it

Prohibition in the thirties accompanied economic collapse and the rise of
crime and fascism. All America is doing is repeating that sad history.
Just as in the thirties the churches descended into backwardness,
abrogating their moral responsibilities to society, so the modern jingo
ridden "Born Again Jugend" is doing precisely the same

Fundamentalists of other religions - often inspired by American
Fundamentalism - have already long lost patience with America. Their
terorist actions are an expression of their fury and rage. This is a
terrible thing - it is indefensible. The terrorist actions against the
west and within the home territories of the terrorists are totally
unacceptable.

But Americas failure to reform - politically , socially , economically,
environmentally and spiritually and philosophically is a failure that
HURTS the world. Damn it - America refuses even to accept the concept of
a standing War Crimes tribunal and seeks to undermine the excellent work
carried out at the Hague to prosecute many of the leaders who are behind
terrorism and ethnic cleansing and war crimes.

You have a big job - and those of us who have stood beside you will
continue to do so

But OUR patience too is wearing very thin

Fix it. - Electing a democrat to the White House is meaningless - all you
will get is another face to the same monster

You need to put the whole rotten mess in order and actually embrace the
democracy you claim to love.

Regards - I appreciate your courage in speaking out.
