The media cares only about what sells newspapers, magazines and
advertising minutes.  And that means they give Americans what they
want, or at least what Americans think they want.

The upshot is this, Americans as a whole are NOT concerned about Iraqi
suffering.  In the general view, at least partly shared by me, the
failure in Iraq has much more to do with the Iraqis own failure to
take advantage of this situation to rebuild their society than
anything else.  This is reflected in the fact that unlike in 2006,
Iraq is no longer a top tier issue.  The economy, ironically damaged
in part because of Iraq, has completely eclipsed it.  This is due not
only because we are seeing the beginnings of a potentially serious
economic period, but also because the surge has resulted in reduced
American casualties.

The surge has accomplished nothing else.  It hasn't accomplished it's
primary task of getting political solutions employed because the Iraq
government has blown the op****tunity.  To most Americans, this is
entirely Iraq's fault.  The initial euphoria and hope that America
might help an oppressed nation shake off the terror and rebuild itself
has faded.  All we care about now is stemming the flow of American
blood.  Iraqi blood is growing increasingly irrelevant.
