England is more densely populated so mass transit is cost effective.
your comment also ignores most of the rest of my post so I'll repeat
some of it here.
America committed itself to private car trans****tation systems nearly
a century ago. The sheer size of this country and the relative
density in Europe make a difference. Americans have chosen to spend
their resources in certain ways. if you disagree with this, fine. I
disagree with it to some extent. If I could catch a bus a block from
my door and be at work in half an hour, I'd do it. But I can't and it
isn't going to happen out here three counties away from the city
because there isn't the population density to sup****t it.
I've said before that IMO, large gas taxes should be applied to motor
fuel (such as Europe does) and car taxes should be based on weight and
horsepower (such as Europe does) and the lion's share of this money
should be dedicated to public trans****t systems (as Europe does)
because this is a more efficient use of oil and other resources.
But that doesn't change the reality of what is now.
