Henry Ford & The Government committed America to the Auto in the early
part
of last century. The early immigriants were used to travel by the mass
transit system from Europe. The government realized that the taxes gained
from auto sales and the early railroad barrons were able to block seamless

transit from one region to another is what helped America "Choose" the
auto.
And gasoline is a "by product" from producing other petroleum products (it

was 2~3 cents a gallon).

The sheer size of this country and the relative

The interstate highway system was built during the "cold war" to evacuate
cities in case of attack, which meant you'd die in your car. You could
catch
a bus or train one or two counties away in some cities, San Francisco,
Chicago and many cities in the north east. I rode on a train for the first

time in my forties from Houston to Winona Mn. When I live in New Orleans I

used the trolley sometimes hourly.

Flordia has been doing this for years you buy a big Lincoln and your tags
cost twice as much as a Honda.

And they won't until gas is $10.00 a gallon, then mass transit will come
back in vogue. manditoraly
