"... the liberty of being deceived ..."

Friday 20 June 2008

"... the liberty of the Press is called the Palladium of Freedom, which
means,
in these days, the liberty of being deceived, swindled, and humbugged by
the
Press and paying hugely for the deception." - Mark Twain, 1870

Maya Schenwar | Congress Funds Another Year of War
http://www.truthout.org/article/congress-funds-another-year-war
Maya Schenwar, of Truthout: "In a step that sealed the fate of Iraq war
funding until next June, the House of Representatives voted on Thursday to
approve $162 billion for the occupation, with no strings attached. The
vote
follows a series of compromises and revisions over the past two months,
ultimately resulting in major concessions from Democrats. The first House
vote
on war funding, taken last month, failed due to the combined influence of
antiwar Democrats and conservative Republicans: a sizable number of
hard-liners refused to fund the war with a bill that contained any inkling
of
'conditions' placed on the funds."

US Nuclear Weapons Parts Missing, Pentagon Says

Demetri Sevastopulo, of The Financial Times: "The US military cannot
locate
hundreds of sensitive nuclear missile components, according to several
government officials familiar with a Pentagon re****t on nuclear
safeguards.
Robert Gates, US defence secretary, recently fired both the US Air Force
chief
of staff and air force secretary after an investigation blamed the air
force
for the inadvertent ****pment of nuclear missile nose cones to Taiwan."

Big Oil Firms Ready to Sign Agreements With Iraq

Ernesto Londono and Simone Baribeau, of The Wa****ngton Post: "Iraq is
preparing to award contracts to several Western energy companies to help
develop its vast oil resources, allowing them to consolidate their
positions
in a country that has seemed less threatening in recent months as security
has
improved. The two-year, no-bid contracts will be awarded to companies that
have been advising the Iraqi Oil Ministry in recent years, said Asim
Jihad, a
spokesman for the ministry. He said officials expect that U.S.-based Exxon
Mobil and Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell, France's Total and British oil
company
BP will secure the biggest contracts."

Re****t Says Severe Weather to Increase as Earth Warms
http://www.truthout.org/article/re****t-says-severe-weather-increase-earth-warms
Juliet Eilperin, of The Wa****ngton Post: "As humans emit more greenhouse
gases, North America is likely to experience more droughts and excessive
heat
even as intense downpours and hurricanes increase, according to a re****t
issued today by the US Climate Change Science Program. The 162-page study,
which was led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,
provides
the most comprehensive *****sment yet of how global warming has helped to
transform the climate of the United States and Canada over the past 50
years,
and how it may do so in the future."

EU Agrees to Lift Sanctions Against Cuba
http://www.truthout.org/article/eu-agrees-lift-sanctions-against-cuba
Agence France Presse: "EU nations agreed Thursday to definitively lift
their
sanctions against Cuba, in the hope of encouraging democracy on the
island,
European diplomats said. European Union foreign ministers took the
decision in
principle during dinner on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels.
'There
was an agreement to lift the sanctions against Cuba,' a European
diplomatic
source said."
