U.S. Southerners hit bottom. POINTING crudely at the genitals of a ****d,
hooded Iraqi, the petite brunette with a cigarette hanging from her lips
epitomised America's shame over revelations US soldiers routinely tortured
inmates at Abu Ghraib jail near Baghdad. Lynndie England, 21, a rail
worker's daughter, comes from a trailer park in Fort Ashby, West Virginia,
which locals proudly call "a backwoods world". "Tormenting Iraqis, in her

you're
hunting something. Over there, they're hunting Iraqis."

John Pilger: When I first went to re****t the American war against
Vietnam,
in the 1960s, I visited the Saigon offices of the great American
newspapers and TV
companies, and the international news agencies. ... -- There were
photographs of dismembered bodies, of soldiers holding up severedears and
testicles and of the actual moments of torture. There were men and women
being beaten to death, and drowned, and humiliated in stomach-turning
ways.
On one photograph was a stick-on balloon above the torturer's head, which
said: "That'll teach you to talk to the press." -- The question came up
whenever visitors caught sight of these pictures: why had they not been
published? A standard response was that newspapers would not publish them,
because their readers would not accept them. And to publish them, without
an
explanation of the wider circumstances of the war, was to
sensationalise".  --  At first, I accepted the apparent logic of this;
atrocities and torture by "us" were surely aberrations by definition. My
education thereafter was rapid; for this rationale did not explain the
growing evidence of civilians killed, maimed, made homeless and sent mad
by
"anti-personnel" bombs dropped on villages, schools and hospitals. -- Nor
did it explain the children burned to a bubbling pulp by something called
napalm, or farmers hunted in helicopter "turkey shoots", or a "suspect"
tortured to death with a rope around his neck, dragged behind a jeep
filled
with doped and laughing American soldiers. -- Nor did it explain why so
many soldiers kept human parts in their wallets and special forces
officers
who kept human skulls in their huts, inscribed with the words: "One down,
a
million to go." ...

"People are so angry. There's no way to explain the reactions- even
pro-occupation Iraqis find themselves silenced by this latest horror. I
can't explain how people feel- or even how I personally feel. Somehow,
pictures of dead Iraqis are easier to bear than this grotesque show of
American military technique. People would rather be dead than ***ually
abused and degraded by the animals running Abu Ghraib prison. "

With US industrial capacity sent to China, munitions monopolists profiting
from bullet shortage. But if anyone chooses to invade us right now, don't
expect to have bullets to fight them. -- Alliant Techsystems Inc., the
Edina-based munitions maker that is the U.S. Army's sole supplier of
bullets, said Thursday it can't keep up with demand from the Army... --
Alliant's ammunition group "last year achieved the largest sales in its
history," Murphy said in an earnings conference call with stock analysts.
"At our Lake City, Mo., facility, we executed the greatest ramp-up in
small-caliber ammunition since the Vietnam War." The higher bullet sales
helped boost Alliant's fourth-quarter earnings, which increased 44
percent,
the company said. -- The streamlining of military contractors not only
has
left Alliant as the sole small-caliber ammo producer, it has also left
General Dynamics Corp. as the sole gunpowder supplier for making those
bullets. "The Army's industrial base is busted," Thompson said. "A wide
range of consumables from ammunition to armor simply can't be produced at
an
adequate rate during wartime. There is almost no surge capacity." The
Army
tries to make up for the limited production capability by stockpiling
material during peacetime, Thompson said. The strategy works when the
nation
enters into conflicts that turn out to be of short duration, but is
becoming
a problem as the war in Iraq enters its second year, he said.

Sounds fair to me. "What sort of freedom and democracy can we expect from
you [Americans] when you take such joy in torturing Iraqi prisoners?"
asked
Sadr, demanding that the US guards who have been charged with abuse be
handed over to Iraqi courts for trial. Referring to Mr Bush's apology on
Thursday, the firebrand cleric said: "Your statements are not enough. They
[the guards] must be punished in turn." -- Shaikh al-Daraji said, "We
have
come here to prove that the forces of evil will never be able to detract
from Sunni-****ite unity. He added, "Your enemy has come to sow the seeds
of
social chaos among Sunnies and ****ies, but he has failed because Islam is

The Mideastization of the US, or: Rumsfeld Must Resign
by Juan Cole

The Bush administration keeps talking about bringing democracy to the
Middle
East, but a key element in democracy is always the accountability of
public
officials to the public. That is why we have elections, that is why we
have
a division of powers, that is why Congress can impeach the executive and
the
Supreme Court could order Nixon to hand over his tape recordings. When
high
officials commit improprieties, they must resign. When they run a loose
****p
and it founders on the shoals of scandal, they must resign. Secretary of
Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz
must
resign. It is the only way the United States can recover even a shred of
credibility in the wider world, at a time when this country desperately
needs the esteem and the cooperation of allies and friends.

The Bush administration has from its inception stood against
accountability.
When Ambassador Joe Wilson blew the whistle on the phony Niger yellowcake
story that Bush put in his state of the union address to stampede us all
into war, someone high in the Bush administration took petty revenge by
revealing that Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, was a covert CIA operative.
Plame's specialty was attempting to prevent the spread of weapons of mass
destruction. When the Bush administration revealed her name to the public,
it compromised all her contacts in all the countries she had ever worked,
and set back the fight against proliferation. This action was high
treason.
Bush could demand that the individual responsible come forward. He has not
done so.

When no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, no Bush
administration official was asked to resign. The main purveyor of false
intelligence on Iraqi WMD was Vice President Dick Cheney. He has not been
asked to step down, even though he was largely responsible for taking the
country to war based on a falsehood. Scooter Libby, David Wurmser and John
Hannah were up to their necks in hyping bad intelligence on Iraqi WMD.
None
of them was asked to step down. They were supplied the bad intelligence by
Undersecretary of Defense for Planning Douglas Feith and his rogue Office
of
Special Plans. No one associated with this scam has been asked to resign.

It is clear where the buck stops with regard to torture by the US
military.
It stops with the Secretary of Defense (and with the President, but he in
any case is facing accountability in November). Moreover, Rumsfeld is not
an
innocent bystander in all this. His policies have consistently aimed at
creating spaces for prisoners to be outside any judicial jurisdiction, so
that anything can be done to them with impunity. I remember seeing a news
conference where a British journalist complained about the US practice of
hooding prisoners as a form of torture. Rumsfeld absolutely ridiculed her.
"Hooding?" He asked sarcastically. The torture of POWs at Abu Ghuraib was
not carried out by a handful of rogue MPs. It was the result of ordinary
practices of US military intelligence, practices that just haven't usually
been photographed. Rumsfeld set the tone in which military intelligence
felt
justified in behaving this way.

Democracy is about more than elections. Most Middle Eastern countries
already have elections. Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, all of them hold
regular elections. They have parliaments, parties, campaigns. Two things
make them nevertheless not democracies. The first is that their presidents
manipulate the elections so that there is never any doubt that they will
win
the election and that their party will dominate parliament (even if space
is
made for minority parties to win a few seats). Second, their regimes have
no
accountability to the public. No one in Hosni Mubarak's government has
ever
had to resign because he performed his duties poorly. He might have to
resign because he fell out with the president. But if he is buddy buddy
with
the head of state, then he can do no wrong.

You really wonder whether the Bush plan to Americanize the Middle East
isn't
being turned on its head. We now have an unaccountable government not
elected in accordance with the will of the majority of Americans, which
victimizes critics like Joe Wilson and engages in torture. Bush and Co.
are
emulating the worst aspects of the military governments of Egypt and
Yemen.
They have no credibility to push the latter toward democracy.

Bush says he is annoyed with Rumsfeld for not informing him about those
photographs of tortured Iraqi prisoners. I personally find it difficult to
believe that Rumsfeld did not brief him on them at a time when Gen.
Richard
Myers was discussing the timing of their release with Dan Rathers! But if
this is true, it demonstrates that Bush is not really president. He has
allowed Cheney, Rumsfeld and others to usurp his presidency, hide key
information from him, manipulate him, and tell him what to do. Bush says
he
won't fire Rumsfeld. That gives the Democrats one more thing to run on.

By the way, the US press is re****ting that Bush apologized for the torture
of Iraqi prisoners at his news conference Thursday with King Abdullah II
of
Jordan. The moderate Saudi daily published in London, al-Hayat, however,
points out that all Bush said was that he was sorry the incidents had
happened. That isn't really apologizing for them, the newspaper insisted.
Asharq al-Awsat did a story in which it argued that while some Iraqis
appear
to be somewhat mollified by Bush's statements, most in the Arab world are
not. Not all Iraqis are, either. It quotes one man who complains that of
50
Iraqi parties, not one has mounted a demonstration against the US over the
photos, because they are all in America's back pocket. (This allegation is
not entirely true. The Board of Muslim Clerics, a fundamentalist Sunni
group, did hold a demonstration at Abu Ghuraib on Tuesday).

For too many Americans, war is a vague, abstract concept, something that
happens to other people who probably deserve it anyway. -- In its
sheltered state, the US was not spiritually prepared to deal with the
reality of 9/11. As a result, the nation's character seemed to crumble
along
with the World Trade Center towers. We were willing to barter away every
freedom we had won in 200 years in exchange for a momentary illusion of
safety. We were willing to devastate one of the poorest nations on Earth
with an unprecedented rain of bombs for the fleeting satisfaction of
'evening the score.' We were willing to listen to lies and ignore the
truth
for the transient excitement of watching our tanks lumber across the Iraqi
desert to 'get Saddam.' -- The complacence of Americans runs through
the
entire US society, making the nation an easy target for determined
fanatics
with an agenda. For example,
it was re****ted in 2001 that when Congress voted to pass the PATRIOT Act,
only about five per cent of them had actually read the legislation!
Meanwhile, a national survey conducted in 2002 revealed that just 38 per
cent of Americans could name the Vice President of the US. Other surveys
have shown that far less than half of all Americans can tell you what the
capitol of the next state is -let alone where Afghanistan or Iraq are
found
on a globe. A poll in April 2004 showed that an astounding 60 per cent of
Americans still believe that al-Qaeda was connected to Saddam and that
Iraq
was somehow responsible for 9-11.

towards the troops, regardless of their nationality. We would see them
suffering the Iraqi sun, obviously wi****ng they were somewhere else and
somehow, that vulnerability made them seem less monstrous and more human.
That time has passed. People look at troops now and see the pictures of

"There have been demonstrations in Baghdad and other places. There was a

The Bush administration is feigning shock and disgust over the revelations
of systematic torture of Iraqi prisoners. But there is no doubt whatsoever
in my mind that the White House was fully aware that such crimes were

their own butts should the matter ever come up. I will make that case
later.
But first, let's take a look at the group that is, I am certain,
perpetrating, or engineering the perpetration of, crimes against Iraqi
civilians.

plotters knew a NW wind day was forecasted 5 days off the plot was set
into
motion. The current state-the-art of weather forecasting limits the
accuracy
outside of 5 days.

I was pleased to read your article "The Official Version of 9/11 is a
Hoax"
... Please note some other facts. My name is Scott Forbes and I still work
for Fiduciary Trust. In 2001 we occupied floors 90 and 94-97 of the South
Tower and lost 87 employees plus many contractors.
On the weekend of 9/8,9/9 there was a 'power down' condition in WTC tower
2,
the south tower. This power down condition meant there was no electrical
supply for approx 36hrs from floor 50 up. I am aware of this situation
since
I work in IT and had to work with many others that weekend to ensure that
all systems were cleanly shutdown beforehand ... and then brough back up
afterwards. The reason given by the WTC for the power down was that
cabling
in the tower was being upgraded ... Of course without power there were no
security cameras, no security locks on doors and many, many 'engineers'
coming in and out of the tower. I was at home on the morning of 9/11 on
the
shore of Jersey City, right opposite the Towers, and watching events
unfold
I was convinced immediately that something was happening related to the
weekend work ...
I have mailed this information to many people and bodies, including the
9/11
Commission but no-one seems to be taking and registering these facts.
Whats
to hide? Can you help publicise them?
Please feel free to mail me.

6/16, 8/13, 9/11, 10/8, 10/17 were the only NW wind days from June 1st to
Nov.1,2001.
The 9/11 plot required a NW wind to blow the smoke plume from the North
Tower across the South Tower. The plan was to get a military helicopter
with
remote-control capability positioned above and slightly ahead of the South
Tower in line with the oncoming airliner to make the final aiming into the
Tower WITHOUT BEING SEEN. A Saab Jet brought the airliner to Manhattan
Island by remote-control but being camera-shy handed off the final aiming
to
the military helicopter. After the crash the military helicopter waited
around 59 minutes supposedly hidden by the smoke before it set off cutter
charges in the South Tower to bring down that structure before departing
during the commotion. However, both the Saab Jet and the Military
helicopter were captured 'in the act' by the Naudet Brothers (Documentary
'9/11', the firemen's video), a NBC news helicopter, and numerous video
cameras.

Sibel Edwards was hired as a translator for the FBI's Wa****ngton field
office on 13 September 2001, to translate documents and recordings from
FBI
wire-taps.
She said said it was clear there was sufficient information during the
spring and summer of 2001 to indicate terrorists were planning an attack.

She told The Independent yesterday: "I gave [the commission] details of
specific investigation files, the specific dates, specific target
information, specific managers in charge of the investigation. I gave them
everything so that they could go back and follow up. This is not hearsay.
These are things that are documented. These things can be established very
easily."
She added: "There was general information about the time-frame, about
methods to be used but not specifically about how they would be used and
about people being in place and who was ordering these sorts of terror
attacks. There were other cities that were mentioned. Major cities with
skyscrapers."

9/11 Nutshell has suggested that the Sears Tower was the target of Flight
93
but because it was delayed 41 minutes before take-off,the plotters had to
demolish it using a explosive charge on the plane set off by remote
control
by the Saab Jet that was witnessed by numerous people in Pennsylvania.

FINALLY THE BEST PART:
"President Bush said they had no specific information about 11 September
and
that is accurate but only because he said 11 September," she said. There
was, however, general information about the use of airplanes and that an
attack was just months away.

This add credence to the hypothesis demonstrated by 9/11 Nutshell
photographic evidence that 9/11 as the plot date was not known early and
could only be set when the weather (NW wind, clear day) was known. In a
nutshell only with a NW wind would the smoke plume from the North Tower
blow
across the South Tower and into Brooklyn supposedly making it possible for
the Military Helicopter to come on to the scene and use remote control to
guide the airliner into the South Tower unseen by ground observers.
Apparently it waited 59 minutes before setting off cutter charges by
remote
control to start the demolition of the South Tower and then departed
during
the commotion.
