Yesterday, fundamentalist Christian icon Pat Robinson declared that the
U.S.
should "take out Venezuela's President Comrade Chavez. His reason? Chavez
threatens oil flow to the United States, and ex****ts communism, and
Islamic
fundamentalism.
Obviously, Robinson and his followers have never heard of that quaint old
commandment that said "Thou shalt not kill." Perhaps THEIR version of the
Bible says it differently: "Thous shalt not kill, unless you covet your
neighbor's oil, or if your neighbor is a communist, or if your neighbor is
a Muslim, or if . . . ."
Where in either the Bible or the U.S. Constitution are we empowered to
spread our values through force of arms, or political assassination? If we
do so, are we not only no better, but in fact, a whole lot worse than
those
we condemn as barbarian. Are we no better than the totalitarian regimes we
abhor?
How should WE react if some brainless big-mouth abroad were to encourage
assassination of OUR president, on the basis of his having reduced a
sovereign and stable Iraq to a shambles, based on oil-greed, and a desire
to settle an old family score?
Pat Robinson, and all of those who think like him, are, in fact
un-American,
un-Christian, inhumane, and in all respects, far worse than Islamic
fundamentalists like the Taliban. Why worse, because unlike the Taliban,
which had no pretensions as to its stand on basic freedoms and so forth,
these people are hypocrites in addition to their other iniquities.
This is why moderates, liberals, and conservatives who really DO believe
in
the Constitution, the Bible, and basic decency, must band together to
ensure that power does not fall to these traitors to the American ideal.
