I think he's telling the truth, though it is odd for a gay man to spend so
much time away from the bar, so there must be one in the outback. I know
a gay man who took a 2-week vacation to Hawaii and spent his entire time
there at some gay bar. The rain forests, volcanoes, coral reefs, etc.
