An Edmonton man who shot to death a woman walking home from
celebrating her 18th birthday was in appeal court yesterday seeking to
reduce his 14-year prison term.
Defence lawyer Charles Davison argued the sentence given to William
Wharry, 24, on his conviction for manslaughter was "excessive" and the
trial judge erred by not giving him enough credit for his obvious
remorse.

He noted Wharry surrendered to police after speaking to his pastor
following the Oct. 22, 2005, slaying, admitted to being the shooter,
wrote a letter of apology to the victim's family and tried to plead
guilty to manslaughter.
