Gov. Janet Napolitano has issued an executive order aimed at
cleaning up nearly 60,000 outstanding felony warrants. But the
order, issued Monday, has angered Maricopa County Sheriff Joe
Arpaio who says it will damage his efforts to fight illegal
immigration.
Under the directive, the Arizona Department of Public Safety would
oversee a multi-agency task force to hunt down felons.
It also would divert$1.6 million from the sheriff's office to DPS,
money Arpaio has said he uses to crack down on those suspected of
being in the country illegally.
In a letter, Roger Vanderpool, director of DPS, asked the sheriff
to join the newly created task force. About 42,000 outstanding
warrants are in Maricopa County and Arpaio has been criticized
recently for going after illegal immigrants and letting the
warrants remain unserved.
Arpaio hastily scheduled a press conference set for this afternoon
in Phoenix to criticize the governor’s plan. He will be joined by
House Speaker Jim Weiers, R-Phoenix, Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa
and County Attorney Andrew Thomas, according to a press release
sent out about an hour before the conference was to begin
