They only stated they saw some people running from a sampan.  There was no
fire at Kerry's whaler.  Zaldonis said it was not possible fro him to know
if there was fire, he was operating a machine gun.  In the Boston Globe
biography Runyon states he didn't know for sure if there was return fire.
After Kerry's M16 jammed, Kerry picked up a M79 grandae launcher and
fired,
causing a piece shrpnel to stick in his arm.

The records at Cam RAnh bay at the time do not reveal any hostile fire
around the date of the episode.

The wound was so minor Dr. Letson asked why Kerry was there.  Kerry
applied
for a medal from Coastal Division 14 Commander Grant Hibbard who refused.
Hibbard has stated he has seen worse injuries from a rose bush.
