GOP meets at state convention and criticizes John Kerry

Associated Press

COVINGTON, Ky. - Sen. John Kerry's presence on the presidential ticket
will
help GOP candidates in Kentucky's fall elections, state Republican leaders
said this weekend at the state GOP convention.

"I am so happy John Kerry is running for the Democrats. It should make our
job easier here in Kentucky," said U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning. "Every time
Democrats in Kentucky find something to complain about," Bunning said, "we
can hang John Kerry around their liberal necks."

While speeches from party leaders and candidates took center stage, the
primary business of the convention was selecting at-large delegates to the
Republican National Convention and at-large members of the party's state
executive committee. Other delegates and members were elected at
congressional-district conventions.

State Democratic Chairman Bill Garmer said "it's really a shame that the
Republicans persist in this kind of name-calling, this kind of divisive
talk, when this country is facing real and serious problems, when we have
a
president of the United States who would like to do away with the rule of
law in America, who does not respect the Geneva Conventions" on prisoners
of
war.

Sen. Mitch McConnell also spoke at the convention. He defended Bush's
actions in Iraq and the war on terrorism.

"Thanks to the Bush strategy, we're winning the war on terror and we're
safer because of it," McConnell said.

The Republican convention delegation will elect its chairman at a meeting
next Saturday.

The at-large delegates are: Gov. Ernie Fletcher; U.S. Sen. Mitch
McConnell;
U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning; Lt. Gov. Steve Pence; Senate President David
Williams; House Republican Leader Jeff Hoover; Secretary of State Trey
Grayson; 3rd District Rep. Anne Northup; 5th District Rep. Harold "Hal"
Rogers; his wife, Cynthia Rogers; the governor's wife, Glenna Fletcher;
Daniel Groves, Fletcher's chief of staff; John Roach, Fletcher's general
counsel; Personnel Commissioner Bob Ramsey; Hunter Bates, Goshen; John
Brasch, Louisville; Nelda Barton-Collings, Corbin; the Rev. John
Crittenden
Jr., Louisville; David Cross, Albany; Dave Disponett, Lawrenceburg; Betty
Drexler, Louisville; J. Marshall Hughes, Bowling Green; state Sen. Alice
Forgy Kerr, Lexington; Spencer Noe, Lexington; and Greg Shumate,
Covington.

The at-large alternates, in the order in which they would become
delegates,
are: Hilda Legg, Cathy Anderson, Adam Koenig, Ruth Ann Cox (Pence's wife),
state Minority Empowerment Director Tierra Turner, Steve Brans***, Gerald
Scott, Basha Roberts, Theresa Padgett, Laura Emberton Owens, Alice Pelkey,
Robyn Williams (the Senate president's wife), David Moss, John Triplett,
Thomas McClain, Helen Hansford, Faith Mercke, Margaret Tabor, Lindy
Forbes,
Paula Burkot, Betty Holmes, Carol Rodgers, Donna Robinson, Helen Robinson
and Warren Scoville.
