ELECTRA

ELECTRA

Times shall revert to a more tragic Age
Centuries may pass; passions do not change

Electra, the diva of grief and pain,
plays a role while Pygmies make war with cranes

The way of Empires, before their own fall,
is to disdain the Other, thought so small

Events unlikely, improbable odds
seem almost to be the work of the gods

The play is written, to a poet's will
The tragic fall, premonition fulfilled

The Greek way is meant for both love and war,
to challenge forces, much superior

Deus Ex Machina, sudden plot twist,
The Emperor's armies cannot resist

THEATER REVIEW | 'ELECTRA'

The quiet revelation of the National Theater of Greece's new
production of Sophocles' "Electra" at City Center is in the
graceful attention the director, Peter Stein, brings to bear on
this often troublesome convention. He understands and
underscores the primal im****tance of the chorus in this chilly
drama of revenge exacted with an almost monstrous glee

It is probable - and certainly to be hoped - that none of us
will know the depths of anguish experienced by the mighty men
and women of Greek tragedy. But this "Electra" powerfully
illustrates the emotional price that those who merely bear
witness pay, too. It reminds us, if any need reminding these
days, that human suffering is contagious.

The Pygmies were a tribe of diminutive humans in Greek mythology.

According to the Iliad, they were involved in a constant war
with the cranes, which migrated in winter to their homeland on
the southern shores of the earth-encircling river Oceanus.

In art the scene was popular with little Pygmies armed with
spears and slings, riding on the backs of goats, battling the
flying cranes

The Pygmies were often ****trayed as pudgy, comical dwarfs.

One story describes the origin of the age-old battle, speaking
of a Pygmy Queen named Gerana who offended the goddess Hera with
her boasts of superior beauty, and was transformed into a crane.

While the story's central idea of a compromising letter seems
quaint these days, Poe loses most modern readers entirely with
his final line -- a classical allusion, in French no less.

It translates as "If such a sinister design isn't worthy of Atreus,
it is worthy of Thyestes," two brothers of Greek tragedy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A large crane collapsed in New York City on
Friday, killing two people and damaging an apartment building on
Manhattan's Upper East Side -- a day after city officials
investigated the crane's operations.

Bloomberg said the top section of the crane broke off and
smashed into an apartment building called The Electra, which is
more than 20 floors high, on 91st Street and First Avenue.

"We don't know why it snapped off and we will certainly do an
investigation," he said.

In March, a giant crane fell and crushed a residential building
in midtown Manhattan, killing seven people and injuring more
than 10 others

Television footage showed part of the crane in a crumpled mess
in the street and a corner apartment at the top of The Electra
that had been demolished. Balconies had also been ripped from
apartments on The Electra as the crane fell.

"AS A DIRECTOR, I'm looking for passion and big feelings," says
gay director Michael Russotto. "Sophocles' 'Electra' has all
that. Electra herself is a diva of pain and grief."

Based on the ancient Greek legend of the House of Atreus,
Sophocles' "Electra" (written around 410 B.C.) is the story of a
tenacious woman hellbent on avenging the murder of her father,
King Agamemnon. Unfortunately for Electra, the killers are her
mother and stepfather, the present heads of state. There is good
news, however: Her lost brother Orestes shows up, equally eager
to exact revenge.

"A part of a larger legend, Sophocles' 'Electra' is able to
stand on its own," he says. "Audiences needn't come forearmed
with knowledge of trilogies or the gods. Since it's about human
passions that haven't changed in 2,400 years - love, hatred,
revenge - this 'Electra' is easily understood both
intellectually and emotionally."

THE GREEKS, ESPECIALLY Sophocles (known for his adoration of
young men), are unnecessarily intimidating, according to
Russotto.

Electra's character is influenced by David Bowie, an androgynous
Rock Star

Electra's costume is based on a palatte of electric blue, silver
and red. He is patterned to resemble computer circuitry. His
impressive mohawk is usually styled to resemble frayed wire

As one of the most eye-catching designs, Electra is often used
for advertising the show

Electra's Components are designed to represent elements of a
Superstar's entourage. Krupp is the Chauffeur and Bodyguard,
represented in his uniformed hat, sunshades and gun holster.
Wrench, as a mechanic, wears a welding apron and her hat
represents the crane found on repair trucks.

Purse wears pinstripes as suits an accountant. Joule's London
design reflected her Animal Truck origin, her skintight red/grey
costume and white bib resembling Bombalurina from the musical
Cats. Volta wears elegant black, her hair styled into a fan,
reflecting her nature of a Freezer Truck. All the component's
costumes are designed on a restricted colour palatte of Red,
Electric Blue, Silver/Grey and Black, this reinforces their
relation****p to Electra onstage.

Krupp - is the Armaments truck and Electra's body guard. In the
Later London version he raced with Nintendo the Japanese engine.
He was cut from the US and UK tours.

Volta - Electra's freezer truck and original race partner. Her
look is cool and elegant, a very classy lady but she can be
scary when angered.

Joule - Starting out as Electra's animal truck, Joule is one of
the trucks who has changed the most since the show's opening.
Now as the dynamite truck, Joule is the most sensual of Electra'
s cars. She has been seen pole dancing at the edge of the stage
and when Ruhrgold, her London racing partner lost their race,
she spanked him all the way off stage.

Wrench - Electra's repair truck. She has a temper and can be
rather scary when angered. Although a female character, she has
been cast male in the German production over recent years.

The chorus of frogs was enchanting, and waved pennants to
sup****t Euripides and Aeschylus in alternation as the dead poets
contended for the favor of Dionysus, enlisting those same
choreuts to demonstrate their points. Silk introduced Beatles
songs as background music in order to provide a subliminal
explication of the contents of particular passages. The actors
were constantly in motion, the costumes vivid, the pace lively.

Electra herself had the look of a Midwestern farm girl suffering
through the Dust Bowl years, poor but honest and rather touching
in her sadness. This is not Euripides' Electra, who is filthy,
ragged, martyred - to represent her accurately in modern dress
one would do better to dress her as a street person than to put
her in blue jeans. She was entirely too sympathetic.

Castor and Pollux, descending through the audience in their
tuxedos to speak antiphonally at the play's close and redeem the
(remarkably calm) Electra and Orestes, presented us with a nice
sense of the abruptness of an ex machina intrusion.

After her threnody and curse upon her enemies, Electra sees the
lock of hair and the footprint. So far so good. But what follows
is extremely improbable. At vv. 175-7, Electra claims that
because the hair is identical to her own it must be her
brother's, assuming, apparently, that siblings never have hair of
different color or texture. Then, at vv. 205-11, she puts her
foot into the print left behind by Orestes

Old Man: Come and see if the print left by his boot is the same
size as your foot, child.

Electra: And just how could there be an imprint of a foot in the
rocky ground? And even if there is, the foot of two siblings
wouldn't be the same when one is a man and the other is a woman.
The man's is bigger.

46. Big Foot Construction Equipment, Inc.

.... to extend the footprint therefore is essential to the crane's
stability. ... now being ****fted at an angle due to the
collapse and the shortened footprint ..

www.outriggerpads.com/bf_worth_knowing.html

Worth Knowing

Stability is dependent on the equipment's footprint and center
of mass. The footprint is the total area enclosed by the sup****t
structures of the equipment. The center of mass is the point at
which the equipment would balance if it were set on top of a
single point of sup****t. If the center of mass is inside the
footprint, the equipment is stable. If the center of mass is off
the edge of the footprint, the equipment will topple.

So it's not hard to imagine how a crane could become unstable
when extending its boom with a heavy weight hanging from it.
Since not extending the boom isn't really an option, there are
only two ways to provide extra stability: Use a counterweight to
help ****ft the center of mass back over the footprint, or make
the footprint bigger. All cranes have counterweights, but there
is a limit to how heavy they can get. Too much and the crane
wouldn't be able to move, and the ground would have trouble
sup****ting it. Simply building the crane with a wider footprint
would prevent it from traveling on public roads. Using
retractable outriggers to extend the footprint therefore is
essential to the crane's stability.

Overloading - Overloading can mean two things. First, if the
boom is extended too far with too much weight, the crane can
still topple despite the extended footprint. Second, if the
crane is loaded with too much weight but the center of mass is
still inside the footprint, the outriggers themselves may
collapse

Cranes are carefully designed and their safe limits of operation
are calculated by engineers who (hopefully) understand the
responsibility they are entrusted with. Furthermore, crane
operators are trained and skilled professionals, and licensing
in the United States is available through various state agencies
and The National Commission for the Certification of Crane
Operators (http://www.nccco.org).
Between good design practices
and knowledgeable operators, crane accidents are thankfully rare
events

DISCLAIMER- The following procedure was written to demonstrate
our procedure writing capabilities. The content is purely
fictitious.

The intent of this procedure is to provide guidance for the use
and operation of the Improbable Event Monitoring System and its
associated interface with the Emergency Environment Restoration
System.

2.0 DISCUSSION

The Improbable Event Monitoring System (IEMS) constantly
interrogates all the known environmental parameters at the
Power Plant and searches for certain improbable combinations.
Once these unique combinations of inputs are identified, and
appropriate signal is sent to the Emergency Environment
Restoration System (EERS) which performs the correct restorative
process to bring the affected parameters into line.

The IEMS and EERS are extremely powerful systems. Great care
must be exercised to avoid inadvertent actuation or intentional
misuse.

The GMS shall not be utilized to maintain an artificially low
acceleration due to gravity. Although this system could be used
to render objects lighter, thus facilitating the rapid
construction or erection of scaffolding and buildings or the
movement of heavy objects, this practice is heavily frowned upon.
There is no credance to the rumor that the GMS will be used to
induce a negative gravity environment in the reactor building to
raise the reactor head and plenum, thus bypassing any required
Polar Crane testing, although this could prove to be a novel
approach.

The RMS shall not be used to move the Sockquehanna
River to a more convenient location without the written consent
of the affected land owners, the Pennsyltucky EPA, the NRSee
Advisory Board, Neopolitan Edison and Filthydelphia Electric
Company who have a vested interest in maintaining the river in
its current location due to its proximity in relation to the
Hydroelectric stations at Safe Barbor, Coltwood, Konowingo and
the nuclear station at Apricot Bottom. The MIMS shall not be
used to maintain an artificial status quo or stability in upper-
level management. Management must be ****fted at least once a
month, whether it needs it or not.

NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

The Commission has made a proposed determination that the
following amendment requests involve no significant hazards
consideration. Under the Commission's regulations in 10 CFR 50.
92, this means that operation of the facility in accordance with
the proposed amendment would not (1) involve a significant
increase in the probability or consequences of an accident
previously evaluated; or (2) create the possibility of a new or
different kind of accident from any accident previously
evaluated; or (3) involve a significant reduction in a margin of
safety.

The previously evaluated cask drop accident is not considered
credible with the upgraded AB crane because the crane trolley is
being upgraded to a single-failure-proof design, consistent with
applicable NRC-endorsed guidance. Lifting devices and interfacing
lifting points associated with spent fuel cask handling will also be
designed in accordance with applicable NRC guidance pertaining to
single-failure-proof lifting systems. The result of these design
upgrades is that the AB crane will retain the lifted load in the
event of a single failure in the load path, including a failure of a
wire rope.

Machina.76804

The term 'deus ex machina' was first used in the theater. Its
modern day equivalent would be 'special effects.' Literally
though, the term means 'the god from the machine.'

Hence, 'deus ex machina', which, these days, has come to mean
(with thanks to Wikipedia) any "artificial, or improbable
character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of
fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot."

All human stories, of course, are filled with Gods and monsters.
Held against the halogen light of reason their entrances and
actions seem to be both artificial and improbable. However,
humans always have just the one foot in the rational world. The
other one will forever and firmly be stuck in the unclosed door
which leads to the cave where we once lived - and where we
return when our waking minds rest

------------------------------------------------------------------
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ex_Machina_(comics)

Ex Machina is an American creator-owned comic book series
created by Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris, and published by DC
Comics under the Wildstorm imprint.

The series details the life of Mitchell Hundred (also known as
the Great Machine), the world's first and only superhero, who,
in the wake of his actions on 9/11, is elected Mayor of New York
City. The story is set during Hundred's term in office, and
interweaved with flashbacks to his past as the Great Machine.
Through this, the series explores both the political situations
Hundred finds himself in, and the mysteries surrounding his
superpowers.

The title of the comic comes from the Latin phrase 'deus ex
machina', and is also a reference to Hundred's superhero persona,
the Great Machine, in that he is now an 'ex-Machine'. In the
first issue, Mitchell explains that he chose the name "Great
Machine" based on a quote about society by Thomas Jefferson.
Accordingly, one of the series' recurring themes is the tendency
of citizens to become overly reliant on their government and
constantly expect it to save them.

Vaughan has said that the comic was "born out of my anger with
what p***** for our current political leader****p (on both sides
of the aisle)"

Before becoming a superhero and mayor, Hundred was a civil
engineer.

There is an "is he or isn't he" aspect to his ***uality; on
several occasions, characters ask him directly if he is gay, and
Hundred does not directly reply in the affirmative or the
negative.

The 'Deus ex Machina' should be employed only for events
external to the drama,--for antecedent or subsequent events,
which lie beyond the range of human knowledge, and which require
to be re****ted or foretold; for to the gods we ascribe the power
of seeing all things. Within the action there must be nothing
irrational. If the irrational cannot be excluded, it should be
outside the scope of the tragedy. Such is the irrational element
in the Oedipus of Sophocles.

Again, since Tragedy is an imitation of persons who are above
the common level, the example of good ****trait-painters should
be followed. They, while reproducing the distinctive form of the
original, make a likeness which is true to life and yet more
beautiful. So too the poet, in representing men who are
irascible or indolent, or have other defects of character,
should preserve the type and yet ennoble it. In this way
Achilles is ****trayed by Agathon and Homer.

These then are rules the poet should observe. Nor should he
neglect those appeals to the senses, which, though not among the
essentials, are the concomitants of poetry; for here too there
is much room for error. But of this enough has been said in our
published treatises.

------------------------------------------------------------------
POET'S POSTSCRIPT

I prefer the word "paranormal" to "supernatural".

THe word "paranormal" has scientific connotations.

The word "supernatural" has religious connotations,
which are superstitious and unscientific. Also, it has a
semantical issue, because anything that happens and
which is observable is "natural".

I do not think that you will be able to believe this,
until I bludgeon you with more and more of it, in yhaer

At first, when I read that there was yet another crane
incident in New York, I thought "No, I am not going to do
anything with that. It would be overkill. I've done that
too much, already."

Temptation naturally gets the better of me, at least to
Google and read more. Then I see the word: "Electra".
Like a phone to a Manchurian Candidate. This means something.
Find out what it is. Get on it, right now.

Seems very much like that - "trigger words".

I have little idea *what* it means, just that it means
*something*. I vaguely remember, "Electra- that is 'Greek',
something, isn't it? Maybe somethign about the crane
incidents representing a Greek tragedy for a prelude to
a Greek tragedy. Try searching for "Electra + Greek tragedy".

Et Cetera.

I had come across the "The Poetry of Spam", even before
reading about "Electra"- some guy complaining that his
blog was getting filled with spam that he thought was
computer generated. It included my name, and is in my
style, so might assume that I had created the spam-
but no, never laid eyes it, never heard of the blog.

I had saved parts of this text - not sure what it was.
Only after reading "Electra", did I recall that it also
contained a lot of Greek and Roman references - none
of which I had copied, so I wound up going back to it,
to extract those additional references.

This is an example of why I believe that the "spam"
is not computer-generated, or random, or without meaning.
The more context that you have, the more that meaning
takes shape.

What is my contention? That gay militants sabotaged
the cranes, to demonstrate their abilities, and are
also threatening nuclear sabotage?

One of the nice things about poetry, as opposed
to prose. I am not literally or unambigiously saying
anything specific. It has meaning on different levels.
It is to some degree a speculative fantasy, a piece
of fiction, about types of things that certainly could
happen. Even as fiction, it would tell a truth
about possible worlds and possible futures.

I don't think that it is merely fiction, though. I believe
that Life is a hall of funhouse mirrors, in which none of
us can ever be sure about the meaning of the reflections.
I doubt that any poet, priest, scientist, or federal
investigator can ever be completely sure that they have
found the bottom. There are layers upon layers of potential
illusion.

I am lost in the same Funhouse of crazy mirrors in which
you are lost. I am not completely sure what is *behind*
the shadows, just trying to convey a better picture
at least of where the shadows fall, and their apparent shapes.

It is possible that it is all merely illusion, with
nothing behind it, although I personally tend to doubt that.

It is possible that every impression that you might get
is literally, right on the money.

I might be mind-controlled, hypnotized, doing someone
else's bidding, without knowing it. There might be
moles in the intelligence world who sympathize with
my cause.

There might be gay-militant poetry fans who see what I am doing,
and try independently to help create the illusion. Personally,
I think that there must be more to it than merely that, because
it is too unlikely that I would even see the meaning, on my
own, in a name like "Electra".

Isn't that a charming thought? That someone would actually
crash a crane into a building, just because it had that name,
and it was just for the purpose of playing a cat-and-mouse?

I also contemplate the possibility that it is not the
poetry that is an illusion, but it is this World of ours
that is just an illusion, a dream of some kind, not real
in the way that we think it is.

I also contemplate that there might be higher forces-
or lower ones - God, devil, alien life forms - who knows
what is its real nature, when it is beyond our comprehension?

That is all I can do - contemplate. That is all you can
really do, either. You might think that you know the answer,
and might be very confident that you know the answer, but
you do not really know, and cannot really know, either, with
certainty.

There is one more aspect, though. I will keep repeating
that I know engage in no sabotage or conspiracy, and am
aware of none. However, when I write poetry, it is not for
the purpose of entertaining anyone. I do not care about
the merits, or lack of merits, of the poetry, as such.

It is more in the nature of an incantation, like
curse words hurled. I am trying to create effects by
sheer force of "intent" alone. Not intent to take action.
To bend reality by pure mental activity, alone.

It would be hypocrital of American society to scoff at
such a notion- after all, that is not much different than
you call "prayer" - a thing that most of my fellow countrymen
seem to hold in high regard.

My notion is not based on religion, though. My only
"Scriptures" are repepresented more in physics books and
speculative extensions of quantum theory. But more than that,
it is a notion based on personal experience and discovery.
I have simply discovered that this kind of thing seems
to work, even though it makes no sense at all that it should.

I think that tragedy is the fundamental core of all human
existence. It is just that some people live in bubbles,
with blinders and do not know it, or refuse to accept it.

There is really no such thing as making light of anyone
else's tragedy, when you know this - everyone else's
tragedy is exactly the same as your tragedy and the
tragedy of everything that lives and breathes. It is
God's incompetence, not a byproduct of our own shortcomings.

In spite of the genuine tragedy, there is mocking, universal
absurdity that clings to the surface of thing - almost
sometimes lightening the load, but yet depriving it all
dignity.

It is ironic that so many people laugh at the
word "existential". The reality that existentialism
recognizes- the obscene blending of tragedy and
half-funny/unfully absurdity- that concept hits the
nail on the head more than all the Christian Scriptures,
put together.

It is perhaps another effect of God's natural
sadism and cruelty, but I jest. Life is so obviously
tragic and absurd, that any rational being would be
obligated to accept that our traditional concept of
"God" is more than merely "naive" - it is infantile.

Any religion that skirts around the issue of the sheer
randomness of Life, the cruel caprice at the heart of it,
is selling palliatives, not truth.

PLEASE DON'T BE MORE TRAGIC THAN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY

Life is a Greek Tragedy, written and performed by amateurs.
Do not make me come over there, and prove it to you.

I suppose that I would tell the mourning familes-
I regret the messy deaths that sadden you, but it would
be my Will that it should be this way, until society
gets off the back of my kind, that has been living
under oppressive, malicious, and indifferent
attitudes for the last 3000 years. If I had
my way, there would be a war of annhilation going on,
until the entire human race, from Russia to Jamaica,
from Iran to Namibia to Alabama, got that message.

I think that 3000 years of oppression, perhaps
some kind of "karma" is creating the improbable
events that allow me to prod the paranoia of
fascist-leaning people, in such times, and live
to tell about it.

"Paranormal" - I do not think that you will be able
to believe this, until I bludgeon you with more and
more of it, in years to come. I think that in time,
it will become more and more difficult to ignore.
If it were not real, I would get crushed, but because
it is real, the outcome will be the other way around,
much to the surprise of most of the human race.

The easier, less painful and less tragic course
would be for the human race to starting acknowledging
the current and historical truths, and start making
amends as if their lives depended on it.
