BEIRUT:Interior Minister Suleiman Frangieh referred both case files of the
assassination of former minister Elie Hobeika and the assassination
attempt
against Chouf MP Marwan Hamade to the Judicial Council Thursday. During
Thursday's Cabinet session, unusually presided over by Lahoud, the issue
of
the files of Hobeika and Hamade was raised. When asked why this file was
tackled today, Information Minister Elie Ferzli replied because a request
had been filed to follow up on the issue. Former Economy Minister Hamade
had
been the target of an assassination attempt on Oct. 1, 2004 and has been
since then demanding a thorough investigation into the

The government has surprisingly referred the attempted assassination
of ex-economy Minister Marwan Hamadeh and the assassination of former
energy
Minister Elie Hobeika to a Judicial Council with the powers of a supreme
court to investigate and try the two cases, the Beirut media re****ted
Friday.
The decision was taken at the regular weekly session of the cabinet
that was held under President Lahoud's chairman****p on Thursday. It
grabbed
a roaring 8-column banner-line across An Nahar's front-page Friday
morning.
The government gave no explanation for the move concerning Hamadeh
and
Hobeika and it is highly questionable that a Judicial Council, English of
Majless Adli, would be able to crack either case and bring culprits to
justice in a life

One example of Majless Adli's failure to resolve high-level
political
crimes is the 1989 assassination of President Rene Mouawad in Beirut on
Independence Day only 17 days after he was sworn in as Lebanon's first
post
civil war president. Thirty-one escorts were killed with him and the case
is
still unresolved by the Majless.
Hamadeh, 65, survived the remote-controlled car-bomb assassination
attempt near his Beirut house in Ein Mreisseh seaside neighborhood Oct. 1.
He is still having brain surgeries to remove the lingering effects of the

Hobeika was 45 when he was killed in a SYRIAN Military Intelligence
remote-controlled roadside bomb that ripped his 4-wheeler to shreds in
suburban Hazmiyeh residential district on Beirut southern outskirts Jan.

killed with Elie Hobeika.

An Nahar said the move concerning Hamadeh's case was proposed at the
cabinet session by Premier Karami and Justice Minister Adnan Addoum, which
prompted Interior Minister Suleiman Franjieh to table a parallel proposal.
"President Lahoud then formally requested that both cases be referred to
Majless Adli," the newspaper added.
