Grace
Grace is the oldest of the "broiler" hens.
Grace came from a "broiler breeder" facility where she and other
hens were subjected to partial starvation and constant
attentions from overly heavy roosters who were themselves half-
mad from hunger. "Broiler" chickens go to the slaughter factory
at six weeks of age. Because of the genetic manipulations that
lead them to grow so quickly, those who are allowed to live to
maturity become very large and their skin is stretched very
tightly over their body.

Once upon a time, there was a man named Darwin West who decided
to enroll in the master's degree program at Purdue University
Calumet so he could study Marriage and Family Therapy. Because
he was a member of the LDS Church he subscribed to its belief

Sabrina made a little scooting motion with her fingers, and the
egg tucked itself into the largest piece of shell. The broken
pieces came together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. And
then all the cracks healed.
"Very nice, Sabrina," Aunt Zelda called out as she hurried into
the kitchen. Sabrina's slender blond aunt snapped her fingers
and instantly changed her casual ****rt and pants into an elegant
turquoise business suit.
Sabrina smiled proudly and plucked the perfect white egg from
the air. "Thanks."

POET's POSTSCRIPT
One of the funny or not-so-funny things about the humor
of human beings is the schadenfreude at its heart.
Whether slipping on a banana peel, or a pie in the face
-things as cliched as chicken jokes - the consistent
theme seems to be someone's humiliation, or lack of
dignity that, humans enjoy.
If carried to an extreme - laughing at someone's
bloody, severed arm- then all of the sudden it becomes
ugly, but humans sometimes cross that line, also.
It is the Roman Coliseum, or folks who used to find
public executions to be a form of entertainment.
I suppose that many people would find my dark humor
to be over the line, but I ask- Do you really think
that you can lecture a gay male about insensitive humor?
I think that the darkness is retaliatory. For perspective,
consider America's sense of humor.
Homo***uals- aren't we just the funniest people
that anyone ever wanted to kill?
One of the richest, most powerful men in America is
Rush Limbaugh. I have watched him laughing, and
stirring up a crowd: "Ladies and Gentlemen, do you
know what progressive homo***uals are doing?
They are showing up in hospital emergency rooms
needing gerbils extracted from their anuses."
Of course, you have never met a gay person in your
life who did any such thing, but to a bigot like
Limbaugh, any story that he hears about any gay
person, anywhere, must represent the whole of them.
A fill-in on the Limbaugh show was former Congressman
Bob Dornan, who joked about "lesbian spear-chuckers".
Dornan once gave a key-note address at the
organization of Dr. Paul Cameron, who has called
gays "feces eaters" and openly suggested the
extermination of gay men.
The media does not connect these dots. It does
not occur even to many gay people, what is the
true significance when another former Congressman,
Sonny Bono, who had a gay daughter, could be blind
enough and indifferent enough to make a friend
of funny-man Dornan.
In New York, in Reagan's era, one of the top
funny-men was radio host Bob Grant, who once
"joked" that phalanxes of police with machine
guns should mow down gays after the pride parade.
In Boston, we have funny-men like Howie Carr,
who refers to the gay and lesbian citizens of
the state as the "sodomites" and claims that
their agenda includes *** with animals.
A funny Republican bumper sticker in the 80's
when gay men were dying, said "AIDS Turns
Fruits into Vegetables".
Ann Coulter, funny-woman, when asked what she
would do if she had a gay son or daughter,
quipped, "I would tell them... By the way,
did you know that you were adopted?"
While working on this poem, I read an article
about a poor-taste Halloween costume at University
of Pennysylvania, if I remember correctly,
dressing up like a murdered Virginia Tech student.
Probably only that- poor taste, not intended
to be cruel, but someone commented "If I were
a student at Virginia Tech, I would probably
hate that Pennsylvania university, for life."
Hate for life. For a single joke. Not actually
intending to be vicious. That is a hetero***ual
perspective on ugly humor. How should this sound,
to homo***ual ears?
Nothing has showed America's true face of ugliness
like its humor. It has been like living in a
Nazis country, where they had a great gag-
telling a Jew, that he had to leave the country,
but could go anywhere. The Jew spun the globe,
studied it, looked up and said "Do you have
anyplace else?"
That is not the Jews anymore. That is us.
It is a pitiful thing- I probably was at one
time a human being with an actual sense of
humor, but please do not get the idea that
I am trying to entertain or amuse you.
I really do not find things like Virginia
Tech or Sept 11 to be the least amusing.
There is a certain perverse sense of humor
that pervades the military and intellience
worlds. I suppose that in situations so
dark, the extremely dark humor is all that
you can get. Without having been in military
or intelligence work, I think that understand
the frame of mind.
If I had my way, there would be a war in
this country- a real war, not a figurative
one. People would be dying in numbers,
if need be, that would make any of its
little tragedies to date, pale in comparison.
- That, America, my country of birth,
is what I think of your attitudes and humor.
I am only trying to help you visualize, that
I would lay waste to this land, and that it would
have this coming, it it cannot realize what
it has really been, and make a profound change.
