     Can't you read?  The _Guardian_ article says 
Krakhmalnikova requested the "leaders of the Orthodox church to 
repent of its collaboration with the authorities."  They
declined.  My point is there's not much sense in them repenting
if they're not gonna stop.

     So you place pragmatism ahead of principle and you absolve
the Church of collaborating with even the worst evils on
grounds its self-interest is at stake.  That certainly explains
where you stand.

     If you had made it untainted through two millennia I could
understand why you would wonder how it happened.  But since 
the opposite is true -- you already admitted to complicity with
totalitarianism, and that's just one example -- there's 
nothing to explain.  Recall that Biblically speaking the Church
is founded on Peter, who betrays Jesus three times before 
dawn, thus setting the model for the institution which followed 
him.
