One of the factors that led ancient Rome from being a Republic to a
Principate was the failure of the Roman Republic
to provide for it's military veterans and to treat equitably those
sections of the Roman populace from which
the Roman soldiery were drawn.
The same was a major factor in the Fall of Rome.
The Republicans, in this instance, made a tragic political mistake, in
my opinion.
