Republicans count on the American people's amnesia.

GOP counts on amnesia

House Republican leaders are promising to give Americans "The Change
You Deserve."

Change?

What change?

Do they mean the pocket change that GOP policies have left the middle
class while sending most of the benefits to the wealthy?

That used to be all the "change" Republicans felt Americans deserved.

But, no.

By "change," the GOP means - and here imagine Republicans jumping up
and down and making distracting noises - "We want you to look over
here at our new promises and forget about our eight-year record of
backing George W. Bush."

What are these?

Republicans suddenly see the need for this change because of something
Travis Childers made clear to them.

On May 13, Mr. Childers became the third Democrat to win a
congressional seat Republicans had considered safe.

The new Rep. Childers won the Mississippi seat despite being the
target of the usual GOP smear machine - he'll tax you to death, and he
loves Barack Obama.

Belatedly sensing that the old tactics won't work anymore, Republicans
are adopting a new tactic.

Rather than simply distort any opponent's record, they are trying to
distort - which in this case means disguise - their own record.

Republicans used to talk about outlawing abortion.

With "The Change You Deserve," they'll talk about better access to
health care.

They used to spend their days killing regulations that might impede
the subprime geniuses of Wall Street.

With "The Change You Deserve," they vow "to restore the promise of
homeowner****p."

Iraq used to be the battle they would fight forever.

Now, following John McCain's lead, "The Change You Deserve" is a
promise to win the war, establish an Iraqi democracy and bring the
troops home by 2013.

How?

By any means the gullible are willing to believe.

Republicans have not really had a change of heart.

They've had a change of mood.

Democrats quickly pointed out that "The Change You Deserve" first was
a marketing slogan for Effexor, a prescription antidepressant.

Was something subliminal at work when the GOP adopted it as well?

We'll leave questions about Effexor's efficacy to doctors and their
patients.

The cribbed GOP slogan likely won't be enough to lift Republicans'
political depression because Americans - 80 percent of whom believe
that America is headed in the wrong direction under President Bush -
increasingly see blind Republican sup****t for Mr. Bush as the cause of
the country's sorrows.

Republicans, through their own past actions, are bringing about their
own defeat.

Fewer Republicans in office and more Democrats?

Yes, America, that truly is "The Change You Deserve."
