Good in parts...but... it appears that Meehan is an official or
unofficial spokesman for the Catholic Church. No problem =96 ideas are
ideas - except the motivation of that institution =96 to ensure that
there are more Catholics and a general lack of concern about the
dignity and economic well-being of the individual person. They have
shown themselves over and over again to come in on the side of the
rich (with honourable exceptions in the lower, and rarely higher
clergy =96 but these are isolated). I have in mind the image of the last
Pope John Paul in Nicaragua responding to the calls of m***** of
people for =93justicia=85 justicia=85 justicia=85 justicia=94 with an
authoritarian =93silencia=85 silencia=85 silencia=85=94

The Catholic Church churns out propaganda against not only abortion
but birth control as well - and this has a considerable effect in
lands in which they have much influence on the people =96 and results in
considerable misery.

Frankly I think that Catholic Church ideology in the most im****tant
things including population control intersects with the programme of
neo-liberal economics.

This is not to say that the family is an outmoded institution in a
cold capitalist world - far from it - and that this provides
achievable possibilities for people who have little other freedoms.
Children are a bonus in that context - but the Church opposes
effective control over that. None of this implies disrespect for the
churchgoing m*****, many of whom find in the church on a day to day
basis someone who cares for them - an illusion but "true"
nevertheless.
