It all depends. If a species is truly facing extinction, there is no
question that such harvesting practices should be banned. On the other
hand, if they are NOT faced with endangerment and their schools are
being properly managed there is no basis for banning it.
The bourgeois "species protection" is more often than not based on the
fact that these folks "identify" with whales (they are not fish, of
course, but mammals) as cute and/or majestic creatures, etc etc. It's
like the seal hunt in Canada. Because these baby seals are in fact
very cute, ergo we should not harvest their fur is just plain
ridiculous. The issue is if the species is facing population pressure
and the harvests can't be sustained.
On Ted Turner. Amazing. Actually, there are a lot earlier population
counters that argue for a 40 to 60 million American population as
"ideal" in terms of environmental pressure world wide. Even assuming
this is true (and THAT could be a discussion) there is no way to get
there...
