Subject: Cyril Smith has died
I regret to have to inform members of this list, those
involved in the Individual and Society Seminars that, after
some periods in and out of hospital, Cyril Smith has died.
It was Cyril who first mooted the idea of these seminars
several years ago. He had come to the conclusion that the
left, especially the Marxists, had forgotten what it was all
about, the realisation of a human potential for communism.
It was to address this issue that he proposed these meetings
between people of like mind but nevertheless of quite
different political backgrounds.
He wanted a free discussion that was not encumbered, as so
much left discussion could be, by dogmatism or the need for
some immediate effect. I think in the main we managed
something of what he wanted. People will remember I hope his
insistence that in his past political involvement he had got
it wrong. This was not any doubt ridden self-indulgence but
always part of his larger purpose to remind people or to
inspire them to the understanding that human liberation
could only ultimately be meaningful through communism as
free association. I will miss him and his insistence on what
is im****tant.
At the present time we do not know of what plans there might
be for a funeral but I hope to find out at some point.
All the best
William
