Why is that any different than giving a tax break to religious
institutions?

As you know, religious institutions' income has always been tax-exempt, 
even before Bush became President.

So whether it's done by a direct government grant or by a tax break, 
either way at the end of the day, the religious institution has more 
money left than they would otherwise.

Would you feel better if Obama promised to expand tax breaks for 
religious institutions beyond what they already are?  With a high enough 
tax break, it would work out the same way as a direct cash payment.
