Advani get's it dead wrong

Hindustan Times
5 April 2008

L. K. Advani'S autobiography 'My Country, My Life' has run
into more trouble after the Kandahar chapter with CPI
leader Satya Pal Dang taking exception to being ****trayed
dead. "By mentioning me as dead in the book, he has made a
mockery of himself," Dang said on Friday.

Last week, George Fernandes, Advani's Cabinet colleague
during the NDA regime, had said the decision that then
External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh would accompany the
terrorists to Khandahar in exchange for IC 814 passengers
had been taken collectively at a Cabinet meeting. This was
in contrast to Advani's statement in his book that he was
not privy to the plan.

On the CPI leader, Advani wrote in a chapter titled The
trauma and triumph of Punjab: "The late Satya Pal Dang, an
Amritsar based Communist leader, whom I admire for his
courageous campaign against Khalistan…" Dang said the BJP
leader, who is the party's prime ministerial candidate,
should check facts before writing. He added that it would
be most unfortunate if a person like Advani became the
Prime Minister. "I am surprised how a leader of the stature
of Advani reached the conclusion that I am dead. And I am
laughing at this mistake that I am 'dead' in a
autobiography type book written by Advani," Dang said.

Advani also came in for flak from former Akal Takht
Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh who said most of the facts
related to Punjab were distorted or wrong. In the book, he
said, Advani had mentioned that Buta Singh as Union Home
Minister removed the name of Sant Jarnial Singh
Bhindranwale from the Nirankari murder case chargesheet.
"When Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was never among the
list of 20 accused persons, how could his name be removed
from a challan presented by the CBI?" Singh added that it
was P Sethi, .C. the then Home Minister, who had passed the
challans.

He said either Advani was not aware of the facts about
Punjab or the mistakes were made intentionally, to gain
political benefits.

Another confession by Advani - on Operation Blue Star - has
led the Khalra Mission Organisation (KMO) to appeal to
Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal to end the alliance with the
BJP. Advani wrote that pressure built by the BJP had
prompted the then Congress government to initiate army
action inside Golden Temple in 1984.

Other gaffes

KHANDAHAR: Advani writes he wasn't privy to Jaswant Singh's
plan of accompanying terrorists. George Fernandes says
decision was taken at cabinet meeting.

KASHMIR: He claimed then CM Farooq Abdullah allowed
autonomy issue to die in 2000 after NDA rejected a
resolution on the matter. All lies, says an indignant
Abdullah.
