Feds defend Arpaio on crime sweeps
Immigration officials say sheriff is following law

Daniel González
The Arizona Republic
Apr. 5, 2008 12:00 AM
Top federal immigration officials on Friday defended Maricopa County
Sheriff
Joe Arpaio's recent crime sweeps, rejecting critics' arguments that the
sheriff is violating an agreement that allows deputies to enforce
immigration laws.

The officials made their remarks as 38 new officers at five Arizona
law-enforcement agencies were sworn in to enforce federal immigration
laws.
The federally trained officers are members of the Phoenix Police
Department,
the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Pima, Pinal and Yavapai
county sheriff's offices. Now, with more than 200 trained officers and
jail
officials, Arizona has the most of any state in nation.

Size, impact of illegal population in R.I. a mystery

01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, April 6, 2008

BY KAREN LEE ZINER

Journal Staff Writer

The sweeping executive order Governor Carcieri issued last month reignited
a
charged debate over illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are costing
Rhode Islanders untold millions, he said, compelling him to take action in

the absence of federal immigration reform.

Carcieri's order directs the state police and state correctional officers
to
work with federal authorities to enforce some aspects of immigration law.
It
also requires electronic verification of the legal status of executive
branch employees, and of employees hired through vendors who do business
with the state.

Immigrant advocates, Hispanic leaders and many of Rhode Island's top
clergy
members have sharply criticized the order, saying it has created a climate

of fear in Rhode Island's immigrant community and is based on flawed
assumptions and inaccurate numbers.

But the reality is, no one can say with certainty how many illegal
immigrants live in Rhode Island or how much they drain - or add to - the
economy.

(yep you read that right, they have no f'ing clue how many of our brown
friends are in Rhode Island, and I am thinking that this is par for the
couse. So what basis is there for the 12 million total number? Your guess

is as good as mine folks. )

ICE Officials to Work with Sheriff on Jail Overcrowding

 By Rudabeh Shahbazi
Watch the story

PENDLETON-- Sheriff John Trumbo has long raised issues about the
underfunded
and overcrowded Umatilla County Jail.

He says too many illegal immigrants are being locked up at the expense of
Oregon taxpayers.
"This area has the potential to have criminals come here because we don't
have a lot of law enforcement in this area," said Trumbo. "The Sheriff's
office is down in man power-- all agencies are down in man power. That
doesn't go unnoticed by criminals."

As a result, he says, illegal aliens come here to run drug rings, traffic
child ****, and worse. Trumbo says last year the jail lodged five murder
suspects-- all of whom had been de****ted before.

Beebe: Illegal aliens on radar

BY SETH BLOMELEY

Posted on Saturday, April 5, 2008

Gov. Mike Beebe disputed claims Friday by callers to his radio show that
the
state wasn't doing enough to combat the presence of illegal aliens.

Beebe said the state has laws regarding illegal aliens and that local law
enforcement and prosecutors should enforce them.

Some prosecutors later questioned whether laws exist that would allow them

to prosecute businesses employing illegal aliens.

"You haven't done one thing that deals with employers that hire illegal
aliens," said a caller identified only as Diana in Little Rock. "Why
aren't
there fines being enforced to stop this ?"

(There seems to be others that think as I and you do on these matters.
This
is a good sign.Remember total de****tation of the illegals is the goal.)

artels operating paramilitary training camps near border

11:53 AM CDT on Saturday, April 5, 2008

Belo newspaper The Dallas Morning News first exposed the drug cartel
military training camps. Click on video for Angela Kocherga's 11 News
re****t.

HOUSTON -- Drug traffickers are resorting to military-style training to
win
a turf war along the Texas-Mexico border.

Authorities say drug cartels have set up camps to train recruits and turn
them into highly skilled killers.

Thick brush along the border provides the perfect cover for drug
smugglers.
Webb County Sherriff's deputies see it all the time.

The remote region near the Rio Grande River is also a hideaway for
training
camps set up by the Mexican drug cartels.

The Dallas Morning News first re****ted the existence of the paramilitary
camps clustered in two Mexican states bordering Texas.

Rugged terrain is common throughout south Texas, and it's the same thing
on
the Mexican side of the border.

Experts say it's the perfect setting to transform new recruits into a band

of assassins.

Among those killers was an American teenager who investigators say was
part
of a Gulf Cartel hit squad that operated on both sides of the border.

"He was one of the ones who was sent to one of these paramilitary camps
taught how to handle high powered explosives, weaponry," said Jesus
Guillen,
a Webb County Assistant District Attorney. "He also mentioned they had a
very strict physical regiment as well."

The district attorney's office successfully prosecuted Rosalio Reta last
summer for a Laredo murder.

The teen was extradited from Mexico after he was arrested for a grenade
attack on a bar in Monterrey.

Other suspects in U.S. custody have also confirmed the training camps
exist.

"I have no doubts whatsoever. The number of people who have mentioned
them,
we've had corroboration from intelligence in Mexico now also," said
Guillen.

The training camps are clandestine, but the results are clear. Mexico's
president has mobilized the military to quell escalating violence in
border
regions where rival drug cartels battle for lucrative smuggling routes.

"I would imagine that they have money to invest in training instruction
and
teaching these people on how to use a weapon, strategically plan and
operate
and plot," said Webb County Sheriff Rick Flores.

The paramilitary tactics concern law enforcement on both sides of the
border, especially those who patrol the territory where drug traffickers
hone their deadly skills.

The teenage hit man who allegedly worked for a drug cartel appealed his
murder conviction and will be back in court later this month.

Incomplete border tunnel found in San Diego
The Associated Press
Article Launched: 04/02/2008 07:54:23 PM PDT

SAN DIEGO-Authorities say another secret tunnel has been discovered along
the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego.

Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
said Wednesday that the passage was incomplete. It ran 14 feet into the
U.S.
and was 2 feet wide.

Mexican authorities discovered the entry Tuesday near the Otay Mesa border

crossing, which separates San Diego from Tijuana. They acted on a tip from

U.S. intelligence sources. There was no opening on the U.S. side.

Mack says the unsophisticated tunnel was apparently designed for human
smuggling but never used.

Authorities say more than 70 secret tunnels have been found along the
U.S.-Mexico border since 2000, many around San Diego and Nogales, Ariz..
Many are unfinished.

Pr. William's Immigration Crackdown Lands 41 in Jail

By Kristen Mack
Wa****ngton Post Staff Writer
Sunday, April 6, 2008; Page PW01

Prince William County Police Chief Charlie T. Deane said most of the
people
arrested during the first month of the county's illegal immigration
crackdown would have gone to jail anyway.

Of the 89 people questioned about their citizen****p status, 41 were taken
to
the county's adult detention center. Although officers have reason to
think
the 41 people arrested are in the country illegally, all but two were
charged with a series of misdemeanors and felonies unrelated to their
immigration status.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) - A new ballot initiative aims to require
government agencies verify all those seeking public benefits in Arkansas
are
legal residents of the United States.
The measure, by a group calling itself Secure Arkansas, also would require

those older than 13 to sign an oath saying they live legally in the
country. The group says those who falsely fill out an affidavit could face

perjury charges.
«Keeping illegal aliens from getting on public assistance just any time
they
want to and taking all of our taxpayer funds, that's really what it's all
about,» Secure Arkansas chairwoman Jeannie Burlsworth of Bryant said
Friday.
Exceptions to the measure would include emergency medical care, disaster
relief, soup kitchens, crisis counseling and short-term shelters.
Burlsworth's group filed the measure March 27 with the state attorney
general's office. The state has until April 9 to review the proposed
measure. If approved, sup****ters could begin gathering the required 61,974

signatures needed to place it before voters in November.
