i've given some background in my response to swill....

he has made great noise about how awful was the 'war' and
    yet has threatened to attack pakistan...

obarmy veers constantly between empty rhetoric and outrageously
     impulsive and immature responses....
his rhetoric slides from confused unthoughtful position to position
    according to his audience

he is not a serious person....he is more like a comedian adapting to
     whatever will get him cheers from his groupies. 
he is emotionally capricious....

he is a born follower...an emotionalist....he is not a thinker....
as such he blows with the wind.....

he is under considerable justified pressure on the security front
    and he just can't cope...he gives every indication, that each time
    he has problems, he goes back to his handlers to be told what to
    say...but he never quite gets a grip on his lines...
he is fine when he has a prepared text....but as soon as he goes
     of the script he becomes clumsy and tongue tied....

the reason i'm going through all this detail is because imv he has
    no genuine position of his own....
thus to call it a change of position rather over states how much any
    of his 'positions' are genuine positions.... 
    thus it is certainly a change of the impression he has been
    attempting to advertise...

he is highly reliant on young fools and what i regard as semi-detached
     pseudo-intellectual lightweights...i think of them as
     'intellectual wankers' but i can't really promote that as a
     scientific description...there should be a useful word for it!!

yet he cannot get elected on those two groups and 'blacks'....

so every so often he tries to pretend he is other than an
      'intellectual wanker' and tries to appeal to more sane/mature
      electorates...eg by his remarks with which i opened this thread.

the democrats appear to be headed for a wall...
the cowards and soft bigots, as face calls them, cannot easily
     dump him despite it becomes increasingly obvious that he's 
     a joke candidate who wins few real primaries...let alone in
     swing states....
