Hagee: Hitler fulfilled God's will

Controversial pro-McCain Pastor John Hagee has said that the Nazis
operated on behalf of God to persecute Jews and shepherd them to
Palestine.

According to an audiotape of a Hagee's sermon in late 1990s which has
recently been surfaced, the pastor said Adolph Hitler was a "hunter,"
sent by God, and was tasked with expediting God's will of having the
Jews create a country in 'the Holy Land'.

He hinted that those Jews who refused to immigrate to Palestine had
been punished by the Holocaust.

The sermon may bring about a new round of political headaches for
presidential hopeful John McCain who had earlier admitted that seeking
out Hagee's endorsement was a mistake.

A spokesman for Hagee confirmed the authenticity of the audiotape of
the radical evangelical leader's sermon, "Battle for Jerusalem."

Since McCain secured the endorsement, both his campaign and Hagee have
been pressed to explain a series of derogatory remarks the pastor made
about the Roman Catholic Church.

Hagee has since apologized for those remarks. 

But his interpretation of the role of the Nazis could be harder to
dismiss.
