HOUSTON (AP) — A hunting guide was acquitted Wednesday of
im****ting antlers and horns from game that had been illegally
hunted in Russia, charges that stemmed from a Siberian trip
he took with a billionaire client.
Robert Kern and his Berryville, Va.-based company,
The Hunting Consortium, had been accused of breaking a federal law
that prohibits im****ting wildlife knowingly taken in violation
of another country's laws.
Kern booked a 2002 excursion in Russia for Houston energy tycoon
Dan Duncan and other hunters, who shot moose and sheep from a helicopter.
Russian law generally forbids hunting while airborne.
A jury deliberated seven hours before acquitting Kern,
who had faced up to five years in prison if convicted.
Duncan and the other hunters were not charged. They testified
they thought the trip was legal because the meat was donated
to Russian residents.
