I have tried to read between the lines of Iraq Prime Minister
al-Maliki's statements and negotiations.
Strikingly absent from al-Maliki's statements are any sort of thanks to
America for liberating Iraq from Saddam; and any sort of commitment,
even in principle, to allow U.S. military bases in Iraq for the long term.
I get the distinct impression that the Iraqi government's attitude
towards America now is "Now that Iraq is becoming stabilized, you
Americans get the f**k out."
That is NOT what the neo-conservatives had hoped for. They had hoped
that the Iraqis would be so grateful to America for liberating them from
Saddam, that they would now join us as allies against terrorism.
Possibly even establish diplomatic relations between Iraq and Israel.
Something like the "special relation****p" we used to have with the Shah
of Iran.
I was afraid that wasn't going to happen--and it's not happening.
al-Maliki and his advisers still see themselves as ****ite Muslims first.
They're not going to side with America against (****ite) Iran.
al-Maliki has many known ties to the Iranian intelligence service. And
al-Maliki's people sure aren't going to ally with Jews.
Looks like we got that one wrong, eh?
