I consider myself a liberal.  I also love having the freedom of
getting in my truck and driving where ever I want.  I don't want to
destroy large swaths of the Earth so that I can cruise down to beach
whenever I want so what's a liberal to do?

Oil is getting scarcer.  Only a fool would think that the answer to
all of our energy problems lies with a material that won't exist in
useful amounts in thirty to fifty years.  I know how the young people
look at thirty years and think, That's a long long time.  Well, thirty
years goes by quicker than you might think.   Shale oil is not cheap
to produce.  You have to heat the shale to extract the oil.  Perhaps
large solar furnaces could be used to heat the shale.  Oil production
from shale is very messy.

Nuclear power, wind power, solar power and any other power that is
converted to electricity isn't much of a solution for motorists unless
either battery capacity is increased significantly and/or more
electric recharging stations are made available.  As detestable as
mass transit is to us who enjoy the freedom of the open road, perhaps
its one of the best solutions for the immediate future.
