Where they ****ed up, and the record on Sparta is the same, is that
these smart *****es didnt have enuf kids. When Lycurgus started out,
they were soon able to put 12,000 of the most fit soldiers the world had
ever seen on the field. But 600 years later, when Sparta fell, it could
only put 3000 into battle.
With Kucha, Khotan, Urumchi, et al, they were all desert oases, and the
land would only sup****t a limited population. And then hordes of Mongols
show up, and it was all over.
They regularly ex****ted girls to the whorehouses, tea houses, and harems
of the Chinese and Persian empires, every so often replacing the girls
with younger ones, which always met with glad approval. But what they
got back, was inside info on what was going on in the Great Power
Centers. You could always tell when a coup was coming in Xian when the
Kuchi packed up to leave town. You understand that, right?
But- none of the girls wanted to go out into the boonies to live with
the jackass Zongnu in what we call Mongolia. So, they had no idea what
was going on out there. The weather was awful.
More than that, it cycled from wet to dry often, so the droughts killed
them off in vast numbers every so often. But then, in the 12 century,
they had a long series of good years, the population boomed, and then
the schitt hit the fan for the rest of civilized world.
There were more Chinese in Xian alone than all of the Tocharian towns
put together. It didnt matter women ran the show. Nobody could've done
anything.
The ruins of Niya, in particular is most instructive. Close to the
center of the Taklamakhan basin, it was a real hell hole. Then, the
river dried up, so 1500 years ago, everyone dropped what they were doing
and got the **** out ASAP. Leaving the furniture in the houses, and the
papers in the ****pping offices. The do***entation is ABUNDANT. It was
all preserved in excellent condition by the desert all these years.
