But what would you claim is excessive usage?

Bollocks. ALL the higher phyla (that is, not a vegetable [and there
are a few plants that feed on insects as well] /bacterium/virus etc)
feeds on living matter, be it plant of animal matter. Unless you
subsist entirely on salt, you feed on things that were once alive.
As regards killing living animals, who are you to tell what the
predators, such as wolves, big cats, hawks etc may feed on? Or us, for
that matter, since we are adapted to a mixed diet?
