The decision to legalize medical marijuana will now rest with Michigan
voters. Six months ago the Michigan coalition for compassionate care
sent a petition to the state legislature asking for medical marijuana
to be legalized. Now lawmakers are saying it's not a decision for them
to make and they're sending the proposal to the November ballot to let
the voters decide.. One local man says this proposal could change his
life. Lynn Allen looks like any average man, but spend a few minutes
with him and you quickly learn his life is far from normal.
Lynn Allen, sup****ts medical marijuana: " have a lot of pain and have
a difficult time with appetite, I finally had breakfast at 2pm."
Allen has spent the 51 years of his life battling disease.
Lynn Allen: "I grew up with severe hemophilia, and also about 20 years
ago, was infected with AIDS through the blood products I take."
And it's because of all of that Allen says he's the perfect candidate
for medical marijuana.
Lynn Allen: "So I qualify probably in half a dozen different ways and
I'll make use of it when it's legal. At this point I'll use the
pharmaceutical type."
He's talking about Marinol, a drug that has some of the same
ingredients as pot, but he says the pill has its downfalls.
Lynn Allen: "It often takes a long time to kick in."
And if Michigan voters pass a proposal to legalize the use and growth
of marijuana for medical purposes, the days of pill popping could soon
be over.
Lynn Allen: "This is a law based on compassion, it's a law that would
provide comfort to people who are suffering and it would be an
op****tunity for people to help."
