And where exactly has legal drugs been tried? Unless of course you
are going to trundle out those two bits of DEA spin doctoring, China and
Iran, whereby they present what was an illegal prohibition black market
to the historically ignorant and claim it was legal.

The last place that drugs were openly sold without restriction would
have been Victorian England and the USA, and if you wish to claim that
era as being a failure go ahead. Just about every historian worth the
title will disagree with you.

On the other hand, if you look at the markers by which the
prohibitionists set out their stall, EVERY single one is an unmitigated
disaster.

  They claimed there would be

  * A huge drop in crime - quite the reverse has happened, and the USA
to its shame now imprisons more people than any other nation

  * They claimed banning drugs would reduce addiction -again the
reverse. Addiction is now much more prevalent than ever before in
history. Why? Forbidden fruit always was the sweetest.

* They claimed that the promised wave of sobriety would bring about a
new era in human understanding and an end to corruption -yet our
society is more fractured than ever before and every day new cases of
corruption by drug money emerges.

How long will prohibitionists keep on insisting that we must accept a
cure that is far worse than the disease? Why do they insist on so much
human misery? What does it prove?

One of the few bright lights that may come out of the utterly
desperate state of the Western economy at present is that government
spending will have to be cut back to the bone, and more and more the
utter futility of continuing with the WoD will emerge, while the
attraction of the tax revenues will grow. The trick will be in finding a
way that the big cheeses like Mario de Costa can step down without
looking like utter fools.
