You could be right and the only thing relevant to the story would be the
lamps.
However, that could also be coco coir or some soilless mix
that would serve as a substrate for hydroponic growing.

I think it is grown in a 50/50 mix of sand and something else,
with hydroponic nutrients. The ph is most definitely
in the hydroponic range - 5.5, which his far too low for soil.
(That is one huge indoor plant. :) )
