Did Israelis Leak New Spy Info to Thwart War?

by Scott Horton
AntiWar.Com blog
April 24, 2008

Over at the American Conservative magazine=92s blog, Antiwar.com
columnist and former CIA officer Philip Giraldi re****ts (=91Israeli Spy
Case Will Name More Spies=92 -
http://www.amconmag.com/blog/2008/04/23/israe=

) that Israeli sources have indicated to him that the recent leak to
the FBI about the new-old Israeli spy case came from inside the
Israeli government toward the end of thwarting Ehud Olmert, Dick
Cheney and the War Party=92s plans to expand the Middle Eastern
slaughter to Iran =96 and that there are more spies to be revealed=85

=93Israeli sources are re****ting that the FBI investigation of the Ben-
Ami Kadish spy case resulted from a leak coming from inside the
government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. =85
[Yosef] Yagur, who is now retired and living in Israel, was Kadish=92s
case officer, handling the cases of both him and Jonathan Pollard.
Before the anonymous leak of information, the FBI had no idea that
Kadish had been a spy for Israel. Now it is investigating a number of
US citizens, including an individual who held very senior security
positions in the Clinton and Bush White Houses.=94

How many different people fit the definition, =93an individual who held
very senior security positions in the Clinton and Bush White Houses=94?
Can=92t be too many=85 More to the point, why would the Israeli government
do such a thing as out their own agents (albeit past ones) to the FBI?
According to Giraldi,

=93The leak of the information at the present time is believed to be
linked to proposed closed congressional hearings at the end of this
month in which the White House had planned to use several Israeli
intelligence officers to provide evidence on the alleged Syrian
nuclear program that was bombed on September 6, 2007. It is now
unlikely that Israeli intelligence officers will allow themselves to
be questioned because they would almost certainly be asked about
Israeli spying on the US. Vice President Dick Cheney and Olmert had
apparently planned on using the congressional briefings as a launch
pad to intensify diplomatic and military pressure against both Syria
and Iran. It is believed that the =93doves=94 in the Olmert administration
who leaked the information are seeking to make a military
confrontation more difficult and are hoping that negotiations,
particularly with Syria, will instead take place.=94

According to the LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/
world/la-fg-norkor23apr23,0,3070215.story ), these Congressional
hearings about the bogus ( =91U.S. Intelligence Does Not Show Syrian

on the great clipboard of war in the words of AEI vice-warmonger and
Ahmad Chalabi champion, Danielle Pletka.

Threaten Iran=92 - http://www.antiwar.com/****ter/?articleid=3D12736

explains how the installation of General Petraeus as Royal Viceroy
over the Middle East and Central Asia helps smooth the road to war.
Perhaps the new and forthcoming spy revelations will help push the
scales back the other way.

Israel Might Have Many More Spies Here, Officials Say

By Jeff Stein, CQ National Security Editor,
CQ Politics,
25 April, 2008.

The elderly New Jersey man arrested last week on charges of spying for
Israel years ago was probably still working for the Jewish state=92s
espionage service in tandem with another, as yet unidentified spy,
former American intelligence officials say.

Ben-Ami Kadish, now 84, was employed as a mechanical engineer at a
U.S. Army weapons center in New Jersey when he allegedly supplied his
Israeli handler with classified military do***ents, according to
charges filed last week.

The handler was named only as =93CC-1,=94 or co-conspirator 1, in the
criminal complaint. But its description of him as the same man who was
handling the notorious Israeli mole Jonathan Pollard all but
identified him as Yosef Yagur, formerly the consul for scientific
affairs at the Israeli consulate in New York.

Pollard, who gave Yagur thousands of highly classified do***ents while
working as a navy intelligence analyst in the 1980s, is in the 21st
year of a life sentence for espionage.
Kadish, who worked at the U.S. Army=92s Picatinny Arsenal in Dover,
N.J., from 1963 to 1990, could also spend the waning years of his life
in jail if he is convicted.

A former senior CIA counterintelligence operative believes the case
=93will never go to trial, because of all the ugly stuff that would come
out=94 about Israeli activities in the United States.
Indeed, Justice Department attorneys have fought to keep =93ugly stuff=94
from emerging in the trial of two officials of the American Israel
Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, charged with accepting classified
do***ents from Pentagon official Larry Franklin.

But the federal judge in the case has indicated he might not go along
with their strategy. Last month Judge Thomas Ellis III indefinitely
postponed the trial of AIPAC officials Steven Rosen and Keith
Weissman, which was scheduled to open next week.

Neither the United States nor Israel, strategic allies struggling with
Middle East terrorism, the war in Iraq and the rising threat of Iran,
can afford a breech in relations triggered by either case.

The Justice Department said Kadish brought home briefcases full of
classified do***ents, which =93CC-1=94 photographed in his basement. Among
the do***ents was =93restricted data=94 on nuclear weapons, classified
information on a modified F-15 fighter that was sold to an unnamed
foreign country (most likely Saudi Arabia), and a do***ent relating to
the Patriot anti-missile system, which the United States deployed to
Israel during the first Gulf War in 1990.

Yagur fled New York in 1985 as U.S. counterintelligence agents closed
in on Pollard. He has not been back since, U.S. officials believe.

They thought that was the end of his espionage operations here.

But Yagur evidently kept in touch with Kadish, exchanging e-mails and
telephone calls with him long after he returned to Israel. Kadish went
to Israel in 2004 and met with his former spy master, authorities
said.

U.S. Warns Iran Of Retaliation Over Iraq Action

by Sarah Baxter in Wa****ngton,
The Sunday Times, UK,
April 27, 2008

America's top military officer has ratcheted up the pressure on Iran
by issuing an unusual public warning that the Pentagon is planning for
=93potential military courses of action=94.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, blamed the
Iranian government and Quds force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard
for its =93increasingly lethal and malign influence=94 in Iraq. He said
conflict with Iran would be =93extremely stressing=94 for America=92s
overstretched forces, but added: =93It would be a mistake to think that
we are out of combat capability.=94

Mullen said he was increasingly concerned about Iran=92s growing
involvement in supplying munitions and training to rebel ****=92ite
militias and =93killing American and coalition soldiers in Iraq=94.

Speaking at a Pentagon news conference late on Friday, he said recent
operations in the southern ****t city of Basra had revealed =93just how
much and how far Iran is reaching into Iraq to foment instability=94. A
Pentagon source said the admiral=92s frankness was =93extremely
significant=94 and could pave the way for some form of attack on Iran.
However, Mullen said: =93The solution right now still lies in using
other levers of national power, including diplomatic, financial and
international pressure.=94

Mullen=92s tough rhetoric came shortly after General David Petraeus, the
US commander in Iraq responsible for the troop surge, briefed Congress
about the =93nefarious activities=94 of the Quds force in stirring
violence in Iraq. There were a total of 923 civilian deaths in Iraq
last month, the highest number since August 2007.

=93We should all watch Iranian actions closely in the weeks and months
ahead, as they will show the kind of relation****p that Iran wishes to
have with its neighbour,=94 Petraeus said.

Petraeus was nominated last week to take over as commander of all US
forces in the Middle East from Admiral William Fallon, who resigned in
March after becoming an outspoken critic of American policy towards
Iran.

Petraeus has been asked to prepare a briefing on the extent of Iranian
involvement in Iraq. It will include the recovery of weapons with date
stamps showing that they were recently manufactured in Iran.

American officers claim that Iran is responsible for new, highly
dangerous roadside bombs in Iraq and accuse Iranian-trained militants
of responsibility for the deadliest rocket and mortar attacks on
Baghdad=92s green zone.

=93The question is not if Iran is unhelpful in Iraq,=94 said Philip
Crowley, a retired air force colonel and defence expert at the Center
for American Progress in Wa****ngton. =93The question is what to do about
it.=94 Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, said last Monday that
Iran is =93hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons=94. He added that war
would be =93disastrous=94 but the military option must remain on the
table. However, a senior defence source said the administration
regarded Iran=92s nuclear programme and its interference in Iraq as
separate problems, requiring different tactics and solutions.

Moqtada al-Sadr, the Iranian-backed radical ****=92ite cleric, called on
his followers at Friday prayers to stop fighting Iraqi troops and
unite against =93the occupiers=94 =96 US troops.
