Violation of Human Rights in India

An Ahmedabad based play writer who has been facing
censor****p for her stand on human rights violation has
bagged this year's prestigious Hellman Hammett Award.
It is recognition for play writer Saroop Dhruv, which has
been honoured by the Human Rights Watch and not by
the government.
Her play tells a story of displacement, of people divided
by the Hindu-Muslim wall.
In fact, the play was censored by the government before
it could be staged.
Saroop is the first Gujarati writer to receive this award.
''I don't write for awards or rewards. I write so that our work
is read and appreciated by the people, but tragically that
is missing in our state. But nonetheless I feel proud on
getting this award,'' said Saroop Dhruv.
The Congress has also banned two of her plays as both
highlighted corruption and human rights violation. Now
Saroop has come out with collection of 37 real life stories
of Gujarat riot victims. The collection is in Hindi because
nobody was ready to bring it out in Gujarati. The space
for the art world might be shrinking in the state but the
award and recognition certainly makes artists feel good
