A Littleton police officer accidentally shot himself in the leg today
while
holstering his handgun after a "live-fire" shooting range exercise.
The unidentified officer's wound was not life-threatening and he was
"alert
and conscious" as paramedics treated him at the Highlands Ranch Law
Enforcement Training Facility, Littleton police said in a statement.
The officer was transferred by ambulance to Swedish Medical Center.
The incident happened about 8:15 a.m. as several officers participated in
regularly scheduled firearms training.
"The officer suffered a wound to his leg while re-holstering his handgun
after a live-fire exercise," Littleton police Lt. Mike Broadhead said in
the
statement.
Douglas County sheriff's investigators responded to the shooting and will
conduct an independent investigation.
Littleton police will do their own internal investigation, including "a
thorough review of the cir***stances surrounding the incident as well as a
policy review," Broadhead said.
The officer will not be identified pending the outcome of the internal
probe.
