How does the cultivation of a virtuous character contribute to a
person's happiness?
* What: "Think!" Lecture on "Is Virtue Only a Means to Happiness? An
Analysis of Virtue and Happiness in Ayn Rand's Writings" by Professor
Neera Badhwar (University of Oklahoma)
* When: Thursday, April 24th, 7:30 - 9:00 pm
* Where: Old Main Chapel, CU Boulder (http://tinyurl.com/3b2dag)
In this lecture, Dr. Badhwar addresses the question of the ultimate
value in Ayn Rand's ethics, and the relation****p of virtue to this
ultimate value, as presented in her fiction and non-fiction works. She
argues that Rand's views on these topics are inconsistent, but that
the dominant view in her fiction is that the ultimate value is
happiness, understood as eudaimonia (or well-being, rather than life),
and that virtue is partly constitutive of happiness (rather than
merely a means to it). This dominant view is also the true one. In the
course of the argument, she also examines Rand's view of the emotions
and compares her ethical views with Aristotle's.
Professor Badhwar has been teaching at University of Oklahoma since
1987. She has published extensively on ethics, particularly on virtue
and friend****p. She is currently writing a book entitled _Happiness
as the Highest Good_.
