On October 2, 2002, Senator Barack Obama gave a public speech warning
what would happen if Bush invaded Iraq.
"I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a U.S.
occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with
undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a
clear rationale and without strong international sup****t will only fan
the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than
best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm
of al-Qaeda."
No one listened--Obama was just a junior senator, and the stodgy
Senate only pays attention to senior senators or the president. Nine
days later the Senate voted 77-23 to authorize the swaggering war-
happy Bush to attack Iraq whenever he got the itch. And what a
terrible mess we are in because of it.
Now the United States citizens have the op****tunity to put that same
man who displayed that intelligent foresight, that sound judgment,
that recognition of consequences of a foolish foreign policy, into the
office of the presidency where he can employ that good sense and
foresight to lead America out of the god-awful mess Bush and his
Republican toadies have created. Can America afford to pass up such
an op****tunity?
