commander of U.S. troops in Iraq, who is scathing in his *****sment that

Among the anecdotes in "Wiser in Battle: A Soldier's Story" is an
arresting ****trait of Bush after four contractors were killed in
Fallujah in 2004, triggering a fierce U.S. response that was re****tedly

AIPAC maintains a virtual stranglehold over the US Congress. Critics of
the Israel lobby other than Walt and Mearsheimer also contend that AIPAC
essentially prevents any possibility of open debate on US policy towards
Israel.
AIPAC should not be crossed. It rewards those who sup****t its agenda,
and punishes those who don't. In the end, it's all about money -
specifically campaign contributions. From 2000 to 2004, according to the
Wa****ngton Post, AIPAC honchos contributed an average of $72,000 each to
campaigns and political committees. For pro-AIPAC politicians, money
simply pours from all over the US.
Every member of the US Congress receives AIPAC's bi-weekly newsletter,
the Near East Re****t. Walt and Mearsheimer stress that Congressmen and
their staff "usually turn to AIPAC when they need info; AIPAC is called
upon to draft speeches, work on legislation, advise on tactics,
research, collect co-sponsors and marshal votes".

activities for civilian purposes only and will not manufacture nuclear
weapons.
"No wise nation would be interested in making a nuclear weapon today.
They are against rational thought," said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a
speech.

Former GOP Staff Member Pleads Guilty to Fraud Charge

The chief of staff to a former senior member of the House Appropriations
Committee pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiring to commit fraud,
becoming the latest casualty of the scandal centered on disgraced former
lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
John C. Albaugh admitted to accepting gifts -- including tickets to
s****ting events, concerts by groups such as the Wiggles and a Disney on
Ice show -- in exchange for helping lobbyists and their clients,
according to prosecutors.

Study shows hybrids of bird flu and human flu viruses fit well, could
occur

TORONTO — An experiment mating H5N1 avian flu viruses and a strain of
human flu in a laboratory produced a surprising number of hybrid viruses
that were biologically fit, a new study reveals.
And while none of the offspring viruses was as virulent as the original
H5N1, about one in five were lethal to mice at low doses, showing they
retained at least a ****tion of the power of their dangerous parent.
The work suggests that under the right cir***stances - and no one is
clear what all of those are - the two types of flu viruses could swap
genes in a way that might allow the H5N1 virus to acquire the capacity
to trigger a pandemic. That process is called reassortment.

Al-Hajj is a television cameraman from Sudan, and until this month he
was a prisoner in the U.S. detention camp at Guantánamo Bay. For years,
al-Jazeera followed his odyssey day by day. Al-Hajj became famous to the
millions across Asia and Europe who watch the Arab satellite channel's
broadcasts and read its website, but he remained all but unknown in
America. Most Americans never saw his photograph in mainstream American
newspapers or heard about him on television.

at a war crimes trial?
Attorneys for alleged terrorists who could face life prison sentences
are grappling with this dilemma as a succession of detainees announce
plans to boycott the first U.S. war crimes tribunals since World War II.
Most, but not all, have also fired their Pentagon-paid lawyers, or
limited what they can do in their defense -- actions that critics say
threaten to undermine the legitimacy of any future convictions.
