I have been to the universities in Beijing and
Shanghai, visiting student friends  there. and
they treat me as locals.
On can overheard  discussion, sometime
heated arguments ...criticising government
policies...unfair treatments....OPENLY.
If you read blogs in the Chinese internets,
thousands of them. ...they criticise more than
sup****t the government policies....until the
ugly incident in Paris involving torch bearer
on wheelchair....
People who still think that the chinese is still
like poeple under Mao's era..is living in the
past.
